Build-your-own-ship option

At some point, it would be pretty cool if, for 100k gold, you could build your own customizeable ship separate from the four standard ship classes. You could use materials to make as many cannons, sails, stairs, etc. as you could want on your ship designed your own way. Might take alot of programming but it would still be a neat addition to an already cool game :)

It would cause and In-balance in the seas since you said that you can make as many cannons sails stairs etc. as you want, one could go ham on broadsides and cannons and sink even a ship of the line in 1 or 3 broadsides if they have it maxed even itf it sounds good and trust me it does, i want to see it happen, but sadly i doubt this would be implemented

Maybe not infinite customization, but a limit in stairs, cannons and broadsides could work! Great idea!

Obviously there'd be a limit to avoid anything game-breaking like this, but it would be only a few more than a war

Yes this is what I was going for. Obv a ship couldn't have 10000 cannons, but it could have plenty of cannons at the cost of speed or cargo or something like that.

Allow me to ask...if the framework isn't based off the standard ship classes, are we building the frame ourselves from scratch? Or are the choices for building the frame limited (ie: sections of it)? Or are they predefined?

A feature like this needs to be carefully implemented otherwise some imbalances could be created.

I wouldn't necessarily say entirely from scratch, but my main idea when making this thread was to have there be sections of a ship that you could raise/put cannons/place a mast/put helm/etc. Each section would cost a certain amount of material to add, and would affect the broadsides, speed and cargo of the ship.

Now this i like better.

Don't forget armor/HP

As long as the ship would be balanced (ex: more speed means less armor). I could see this being a great addition to the game. The 'sections' I also think is a good idea. I could see daring people putting all of their cannons/broadsides on one side of their ship if they were to be free-placed

EDIT: However, I would LIKE to free-place my cannon design....perhaps only placing them in certain areas?

Sorry about the confusion at first, I made the thread off of little thought and sleep, just a mere idea that came into my head.
Now that I thought about it more, I'll go into greater detail. (numbers aren't 100% correct but it's just for the example)

Imagine that [ ] is a section, * is a cannon, + is a mast, v are stairs and o is the helm. Each section would be able to hold only a few of these separate five things, excluding stairs.

You can add a section (up to 25, let's say) for 10 pine, but each section over ~7 would hurt the ships overall speed. Adding cannons would cost 10 iron, but having too many cannons would lower the cargo and armor of the ship. A broadside cannon would be added every other section. Adding masts would cost 10 canvas, but would increase the speed of the ship by one knot up to a limit. Adding stairs would cost pine as well, and the helm just comes free. Of course, in my mind there are aesthetic props you can have, such as columns, captains quarters, railings, planks to be walked, all sorts of pirate-y things,

You can design a ship such as this: (quote this to see the correct ship layout, it gets squeezed in the original post

I tried to make it unique from any of the other ship classes for the purpose of example.

There are 8 sections and cannons, so that would cost 80 iron and 80 pine. There are 3 masts, which would cost 30 canvas, but adds 3 knots to total speed. there are some stairs which would cost, about 40 pine. The overall speed would probably be 13 knots with the masts, since there are 8 sections and the fastest speed is 11 knots (light sloop I think). There are 8 sections, so there would be 4 broadsides per side. Cargo would probably be about 8 or 10, not really sure how cargo is factored in on the standard ships.

This is just a standard ship no bigger than a light ship, so hopefully if this gets added, bigger and badder ships are made. Also, once again, the numbers are not 100% correct so don't hole me accountable for that please ;)

I now have a ship as high as a navy fort with cannons all on the top floor. I like this ;)

1 suggestion: Implement some rare ship materials too, instead of just commons. For example, if you made you ships masts out of silk instead of canvas, then you have better speed and your sails can take more damage. I think this is a great idea, it just needs to be thought out we'll before completely implemented!

So you basically made a Galleon?

I'm not really sure which materials are rare and common, I just did the one that made the most sense to me at the time. But yes, very good point. This is just a rough draft concept and if it gets popular we can redesign it to work better for the game.
