Suggestion Character name changes

Can't remember if POTCO had this or not, but I think being able to change your pirate's name would be pretty cool. Since TLOPO is non-profit, the way I think it would work best is giving players one free name change every month. This way, people won't be able to spam name changes. It'd work the same way it does when you type a name for the first time, meaning your name would have to be approved and whatnot.

It wasn't in POTCO, so I don't see it happening in TLOPO. I'm sure that people would find a way to abuse it, for example harass others then change their name so they can't be reported.

I can see if you made a typo in your name that you could request it to be fixed, but otherwise not sure why name changing would be used.

Many people sometimes regret choosing a name for their character, and therefore would like to change it, so I personally think many people would use it. As for the reporting thing, I'm sure the developers would have a way to identify players, even if they changed their name in an attempt to bypass a report.

You should only get your one shot to create your name. To prevent a typo, just double check it before you click "Finished". As Katnypp said, it would probably just be abused. But if this were to be implemented, maybe a limit like once or twice per character.

Honestly, I see no scenario where this feature would be abused. It exists in many MMOs and has never been an issue. But with that being said, I don't mind if it doesn't get added, this was just a suggestion. Also, I agree with @Stormtimbers, maybe every 3 or 6 months would be better rather than once every month.

I could see this being confusing to other players who don't know about the name change. "Who are you?" "I'm ____". And now that I think about it, this could cause potential for an increase in identity stealing attempts if someone wanted to pretend to be someone else and just claim that a name change happened.

It's a creative idea, but I think the benefits don't quite outweigh the drawbacks of it. Sorry

I don't like the idea of name changes, either, mainly for the bolded reason.

This idea alone is open to abuse, but this can easily be fixed. A cooldown after changing your character name, and/or a limited amount of name changes per account would fix this issue. As for not recognising people after name changes, add a tooltip when hovering over their name in the friends list (and similar menus) that would show their previous name(s). Steam has a similar system, and it works great.

I also feel like when presented with a basic idea, we should consider what it can be, as well as criticising it. I feel like people are shutting down ideas that could (perhaps in a slightly different form) make TLOPO a better game if implemented.

As I stated above, this could very easily be avoided with some extra developing time. I don't know how the current reporting system works on TLOPO but for example; instead of showing the name of a reported character, show their unique character ID (if it exists). This way, you can punish the person regardless of whether or not they have changed their name (this is because you are punishing them based on their character ID, which is static unlike their character name).

thats easily circumvented with the account name not being changeable. Name change would be a cool edition but it should ahve some cooldown like you can only change your name once a week or something if that

I cant like this post nearly enough. People are incredibly resistant to change about the game in pretty much any form

There was a way to change your name in POTCO. I used to do it all the time. It was a glitch though. I forget what you even had to do.

It wasn't a glitch; it was a hack and the means to do so was distributed readily online by a few whom didn't have the maturity to understand the implications in-game for doing so.

Beside a typo, can someone explain to me what other "benefits" would such an option provide? Players would already have 2 additional pirate-slots in comparison to what was provided on POTCO and so...I don't GET the feasibility such an option would provide other than people trying to dodge accountability for their own play-time.

Why are you so against it? What exactly is so wrong with having the option to change your pirate's name?

I'm not trying to be rude/snarky or start an argument by saying this, but to answer your question, there are multiple drawbacks to adding a name change option listed above in previous replies.

The reason people would like to change their character's name is customisation without the loss of progression. There is no multitude of benefits, but it is a very simple idea that would come in handy for a lot of people. The 'feasibility' of the idea, I don't know about as I'm not on the team, but there is clearly a demand for this feature, so it could be considered.

The issue is users dodging accountability, as he said. Someone could break the rules, then quickly change their name afterwards so that the mods would have a harder time tracking them down. This is a strong argument against your idea, if you assume that people could change their names whenever they wanted, with no waiting period.

I mentioned in my post before that this idea was very simple. On its own, its hard to see anything wrong with it. To view this idea as a bad one, you would have to make the assumption that it would be placed in the game in the way you wouldn't want it to be. We should think "this could be a huge problem, here's how we can avoid this" instead of "this could be a huge problem, so let's scrap the concept".

Without trying to insult anyone, the reasons I've seen that are against this idea are pretty baseless/make no sense. The only true argument that I agree with would be the whole "break rules and change your name" thing to bypass a report. But as myself and others have stated, this could very easily be patched with some developing time.
