Discussion Common bugs and work arounds

Mikte

Honorable Pirate
Been seeing a lot of posts on the same bugs over and over again, so to help with that and to keep the forums cleaning I'm making this as a quick guide on different bugs I've encountered. If you've encountered other bugs and found methods that seem to work please do post them. I'll also add to this as well as I see more trends.

-Empty inventory/ reset notoriety
Work around:
Completely close game out and log back, might require multiple tries.
*I've noticed logging out inside buildings and then logging back on another server yielded quicker results

To the Dev's: Until a fix is found, a possible solution for this would be to implement a chat command that would reload inventory/experience to avoid having to restart the game to fix it.

-Swimming upon boarding a ship (Other peoples ships)
Work around: Commonly happens after previously docked while aboard that ship and then boarding it again. Only way I've found to fix this is to close out the game and log back on after each trip.
*Possible to teleport to a friend whose on that ship but I've yet to try this method. I remember this bug being present during POTCO although not as frequent.

To the Dev's: Add a "ramp" of some sorts, clipped below deck to allow players to just walk back up or raise the node where players spawn on the ship off the ground so we just fall onto the deck.

-Crash upon docking
Work around: Docking on wild islands is your best but not a guarantee to avoid crashing as less "stuff" happening reduces load on the game. Having people on cannons seems to increase the chances of crashing so make sure to have everyone off the cannons before docking.
Linked tip: https://piratesforums.co/threads/crashes-caused-by-memory-leak-workaround.11642/
*Other methods to avoid crashing is to reduce graphics quality, disable the fancy sky dome, fancy loading screen, disable both the music and sounds audio and overall reduce the amount of "stuff" going on as possible.

-Ships cannons and wheel no longer work
-Cause:
This happens every time someone starts to repair the ship
*Give about 1-2 minutes to give the server a chance to catch up as the effects are similar to the server lagging.
-Work around: Don't even look in the direction of the repair spot. Only known fix when this does happen is first politely inform the person of that bug and then have everyone get off of the ship.
*Don't forget to disable all boarding permissions as it seems the ship is permanently bugged (until server restart) when someone boards after it bugs out.
-To the Dev's: Until a fix is found I would remove the ability to repair ships to reduce these incidents.

-Can't move with sword out (rarely but possible with other weapons, process is the same)
Fix:
Hit escape until the menu comes up, then exit that menu and choose another weapon. After you've brought out the other weapon you should be able to play as normal with your sword.

-Fishing Boat completely bugging out when sailing [Fixed?]
Work around: When sailing, do so at short bursts. Sail for a few seconds then get off and repeat the process. A pain when getting legendary fish but slow and steady wins the race (and saves your 1000 gold)
*I've yet to find a fix for this, unless your seeking legendary fish its best to just rent the ship and not even touch the wheel.

-Searchable containers yield nothing
Observation:
I've yet to encounter this bug, but going off of what others have said, the chances of it working are random. My best tip for this would be to close the game out and log back in, but log onto a different server.
*Otherwise, best wait for the Dev's to nail down the issue and live without your nades.

-Can't exit the building, doors don't work
-Work around: Just a issue of the exit node being misplaced, best way to find it is to enable a quest which causes the "Ray of Light" to shine on the nodes position. Or you could just teleport out, both methods work without much trouble.
*Whenever you encounter a misplaced node, do report it to the Dev's.

What would prove to be beneficial is if the forums had dedicated "categories" according to specific bugs, glitches, issues, etc. pertinent to keeping things tidy and easy to locate (for everyone).

As it remains, everything is mixed all together and people are forced to have to read through other things which do not necessarily apply to their own game-play experience. As a result, some things are forgotten and various threads are written which have to do with the exact same thing.

Pretty true. Often there are around 10-15 threads about the same issue. But, people could also search in the search bar to see if a thread already exists.

Aye but, I am of the suspicion that few people will take the time to search for something here rather instead of just posting something quickly. :)

-Severe Lag
Observations:
After running around and noting different trends, I've come to the conclusion that the lag stems from character models.

Going to a shop with one character and your avatar lag is gone, but as more people filed into the building it got progressively worse, and fluctuated depending on what they where doing (e.g. standing, flipping coin, walking, dancing, emotions, attacking with weapon).

This also includes NPC's and this was tested at fort Charles. Standing near the Grace the gypsy (and facing away from the fort but looking at her) yields good frames and progressively gets worse as more and more characters are loaded. Approaching the fort and entering it the lag got worse as more characters where visible via line of sight. As the NPC's do stuff such as engaging a player the lag got worse.

Work around: Do fixes as if you where trying to increase performance, nothing you can do on your end to my knowledge. Otherwise go to areas with as few characters/players as possible and avoid caves like the plague (e.g. Cursed Caverns, Beckett's Quarry).

To the Dev's: Animations, based off what I've seen seem to evoke the worst of the lag, perhaps that's a good place to look for the issue.
