Quick question before I submit an entry. Are we able to write a race specifically for the island, or is that disallowed?

"Isla de los Condenados" or Island of the darned in Spanish. This island was once home to a thriving community, far more vast that Port Royal. But, they encountered Spanish gold, and that is when their woes began. Jolly Roger visited them, and demanded their gold. The inhabitants openly defied him, and as such, the whole island, including the inhabitants, were cursed, never to be on the plane of the living, but neither to be dead, continually stuck in limbo. To further mock the once prosperous town, Jolly Roger took all of their gold, and enslaved some of the inhabitants to his evil army. And thus, the island took on a new name, The Island of the darned. This could be a base of Jolly Roger's minions. Quests would include; hunting down Jolly's minions; catching ghosts; finding lost souls and setting them free; and find clues as to Jolly Roger's whereabouts. Also, it would look inviting on the outside, but it would be dangerous on the inside.

Wow. Can't even say an island name without it being changed.

Island Name: Caverna darnati, (Latin for: Cavern of the Condemned)

Before pirates found treasure from the values of gold and silver, they plundered the oceans for the more natural wonders of the world. Specifically, they sought precious stones and pearls known to be larger than the fists of a ship's carpenter, loot that had value in beauty and size. The greatest pirate lords agreed that with the binding of the gods, the ocean became an easier place to command among themselves, allowing all their ventures to become more and more profitable. Those pirate lords agreed on a fortress and cache for the greatest discoveries. A place where information on the secrets of the oceans and the skills of sailing and wielding magic were collected for the use of only the fiercest of pirates. As the cache grew, greed again began to divide the union of pirates, blind-wealth obliviating the collective spirit that ran through the sailors of the world. The gods of Earth, once weakened by the collective magic of the pirate lords, regained strength enough to form a control, a punishment. A leviathan formed into being, carved from the underwater cliffs and essence of the oceans creatures, the Lusca. It's power came from the storms that swallowed the sky, and ripped the wind into shards of whirling lightning. It would patrol from the depths awaiting the pirates, turned vicious, and suck their ships into the crushing waves through vast whirlpools. When rumour pervaded the swells and travelled to port of a new beast, the pirate lords thought safe their bounty, and all came to the secret island that housed their priceless fortunes to hold court. The gods perceived this action and urged the Lusca, a creature so powerful they couldn't command, to the underwater caves that hid below the fortress. In one night, the creature produced its potent maelstrom and hurricane and incised the middle of the island to the bottom of Earth's crust, expelling pieces of the treasure and fortress out from the hole and across the Caribbean. The one pirate lord, who had resisted his corruption, was the only the only one spared. The gods using their last tensile strength sheltered him. He returned to the remaining husk of the island, holding the last pieces of the all-but-lost knowledge of old, awaiting there to teach the first pirate king the secrets of pirate skill and history. He guards the only piece of remaining treasure, a stone of paraiba tourmaline the size of a human skull, hidden somewhere on the island or in the hidden caverns.

Quest: Use hints and secrets hidden around the islands of the Caribbean (Having been thrown everywhere...) proving your conviction and loyalty, to determine where on the island the last original pirate lord awaits, and what happened to The Lusca.

Ocean's Graveyard

The island of Ocean's Graveyard is home to entire fleets of rundown Navy, EITC, and pirate ships. It was the main battlefield where the Royal Navy's fleet fought against the fiercest pirates. That was the aftermath after a bloody and destructive sea battle. In honor of the fallen men and ships, it was named the Ocean's Graveyard. Still, after many years lots of destroyed ships managed to find their way to the graveyard, joining the others. There was one pirate who had survived the demise of his ship, Captain James O'Neill. His ship had been crippled by Jolly Roger's ship in an ill attempt to once and for all end Jolly Roger. His entire crew had succumbed to Roger's curse and joined his crew, but Captain O'Neill was a strong pirate and fought off the curse until he was shipwrecked in Ocean's Graveyard. After several years of living in Ocean's Graveyard, he wanted to mend his ship and watch it sail the Caribbean again. He had an issue though. Since he had no means of transportation, some of the materials that he needed were unavailable to him seen as they were only found in other islands.
The quest begins when you master the Sailing skill, acknowledging you're a master sailor. Captain O'Neill is in need of a pirate who can help him gather the items he needs to rebuild his ship. The items are: wooden planks, sails, cannons, powder, cannonballs, a mast, and barrels. You must venture to Tortuga, Port Royal, Padres del Fuego, and even Kingshead. You must defeat several high-ranking Navy, Undead, and EITC enemies. After gathering all these supplies, O'Neill builds his ship and sets sail once again to find a new crew. The quest's reward is a hefty gold loot and a legendary navigation tool.

Island name: Začátek
Translation: The Beginning

Long ago, two frighteningly powerful beings or our relm did battle, one seeking to dominate the other. Each slash dug canyons, every thrust raised mountains, and the clash of their blades is said to create the very wind. Their battle would go on to create great change to our world, but was it for better or for the worse? As time past on this endless quarrel, the hunger for power grew more severe. The fight escalated and the world began to break, thunderstorms formed, mountains became volcanos, and the roar of these beings cut through the air and straight through the atmosphere. They had to stop. Too much exposure would devestate the very world they stood on and both would perish. When the two beings pulled back, ready for their last and strongest strike, a third being descended between them. " Cease this war of yours for the safety of us all, for if you don't this world and all in it will fall". The beings warning fell on deaf ears. The two flew at each other, content with having to go through the third to get the other. The third did not flinch, as he rose his hands into the air, his body began to shine a great light. "If words cannot stop you from trading blows, then we shall take you where you can fight forever, down below". The light formed into ropes and grabbed the two beings tight. All three descended into the ground, as the earth began to swallow them, the light shown ever brighter. And then, it was gone. All were gone. In their place was a plateu, where all three beings battled for dominance for eternity. Upon these three being sealed, the plateau became a place where it always rained, and they say that the storm formed the sea. From this legend came the legendary island Začátek, long believed to be The Beginning. Some say the very earth still quakes from the great battle of the Three.

Since that day, the world started to grow. With the endless water raising, plants began to grow, people dominated the surface and peace was achieved. Too this day they search for Začátek. They search for The Beginning.

If you mean like the tree stumps/davy jones crew/undead, I guess it would have to fit with the POTCO genre. Like the tree stumps on Outcast aren't human but they fit with the story. So you could if it makes sense. If you meant something else, please clarify and I'll do my best to answer ;)

I was thinking of a transitional race between humans and mermaids/mermen. We know that mermaids exist in the universe because they were in one of the movies. (I can't remember which movie because it's been years since I've watched any of them.) They would have moved from tails to legs, but attributes like the scales would be kept and would have spread further around their body. The only problem with this is that writing out the whole thing would take up far more than the 400 word limit.

That sounds cool! You can go slightly over, just try to be concise if possible.

Atolón de Buques

Translation
Atoll of Ships

Story

Atolón de Buques used to be a very small atoll east of Padres Del Fuego and south-south east of Kingshead until the navy arrived. As it was an atoll with a decent sized gap that ships could sail through it suited the navy's need for a large protected drydock area for ship production in the caribbean. Over a couple of years the small atoll's landscape drastically changed with the navy building more and more drydocks and forts to protect those drydocks. Pirates seeing this as a danger to their freedom staged many massive attacks on the little atoll. They were too late though, by the time they were organized enough to attack the navy had forts placed along every strategic point of the atoll, along with an extremely intimidating fleet of Frigates and Ships of the Line. The ensuing destruction of hundreds of ships is what led to the land being known as the Atoll of Ships. So many ships were sunk around the area that they soon became a part of the atoll, allowing the navy to continue building. The treasure in the surrounding area are of such an unprecedented amount that its said if a pirate was able to recover even a quarter of it they would be as wealthy as the king himself. Of course this tale leads pirates to their ensuing doom every day, but could you be the lucky one?

Well this is embarrassing, I just spent all evening working out the details for a series of quests and I had missed the 400 word limit thing, oh well, I'll just give the basics and sum up the idea I had for the story.

Freetown.png

An uncharted island that was discovered by the female pirate captain Anya Stormcrest and founded as a Pirate Republic. Since then it has become a popular destination for Pirates looking for a place away from the English and the forces of Jolly Roger. However the secret of Freetown couldn't be kept forever, and their enemies have started to infiltrate the island. You've been called to Freetown in order to try and help the island be kept safe. When you arrive on the island you have to first prove your worth to Captain Stormcrest who seems reluctant to trust the word of a newcomer, but gives you a chance to prove yourself. After proving your worth as a pirate captain, you are asked to help around the island in order to prepare for the coming invasion by the Navy as well as to stop the incursion by Jolly Roger's forces that are encroaching on the island. You are first asked to help build up the defenses of the island with cannons and barricades in order to keep everyone safe from the encroaching naval forces, then some potions to stop the skeletons, and finally fish to keep the island well fed. Anya then directs you to to find the plans of the Navy, first by getting into Fort George in order to get information and then by marooning Naval officers on wild islands to get their parts of the plans for the attack on Freetown. After you finish that she directs you first to Reaper Beach in order to stop the Skeletons invasion, and while you defeat their leader there, you are told that their real leader is in the Core and are sent there to stop them after completing a ritual, which ends any real threat to the Island from Jolly Roger for now. After repairing Anya's personal ship the Morgan le Fey, you are asked to take command of the ship in order to help fight off the encroaching Navy fleet that attacks Freetown. It ends with a boss battle against the Royal Navy flagship the HMS Pendragon, you are thanked for your assistance and rewarded with a special weapon you can use to fight the English or the Skeletons.

Island Name: Bloqueada Tierra

Layout: Bloqueada Tierra is made of two islands. A large central mass, and a second circular island that surrounds the main mass. The external island is open in one area, but it is artificially closed and opened by a large gate that was manufactured by the islands inhabitants to block or allow access via ship to the central mass. Whether or not these gates are opened or closed is decided by who is in control of this part of the island at any given point in time. Another thing worth noting is that the outer ring is where the majority of the main settlements on the island were made while the central mass is typically left to only be visited when resources are required.

Inhabitants: The primary inhabitant of the island(s) are the Conmut. These beings are a kind of second missing link between fish and human. However, they have come much farther than mermaids and mermen. The Conmut have legs and are capable of surviving on dry land, but they are still adept swimmers and possess the ability to breath underwater. They can be easily identified by the presence of scales on various parts of their bodies. The scales are concentrated mostly around the sides of the abdomen, calves, thighs, and forearms. What seems to be the strangest thing about their bodies is how durable they are. Their skin is far thicker than a human’s even though it still feels the same when not making contact with the scales. So they can work in rugged environments with far less issue than a human.

Island Status: The central mass of Bloqueada Tierra is filled with resources. The two most important of which are the lumber and quality metals. Though these raw metals are desirable for their durability for the making of weapons and tools, precious metals such as gold and silver are scarce. Despite this, they could easily use their materials to trade if they were given the opportunity. Which they have been given. Sadly, there’s a single obstacle in the way of this. While most of the Conmut wish to do business and coexist with humans, a small militant group broke off that sees humans as nothing more than a nuisance and as a result, a power struggle exists on the island. Trade is nearly impossible due to the continuous fighting, and the gate that allows for entry to the main island is where the brunt of the fighting takes place. If only there were people willing to lend aid to the Conmut and put an end to the constant struggle they face. They'd find a powerful ally willing to provide plenty of resources in the long run.

Quest(s): With the island's main entry blocked off by the gates, it appears that a trek across dry land is necessary to get anywhere. Your first job is to get a feel for the island and become better acquainted with your new allies. Head to the main settlement and speak with the leaders of the Conmut and find out what you can do to help them. It looks like the militant group has been causing trouble for the outer settlements. You'll need to go clear them out and make sure everyone is okay before heading for the gates and gaining control of them to allow your ship access to the interior of the surrounding ring. If you're successful, then the militants will retreat to the central mass and fortify there. It's time for one final push to get rid of them. With the militants gone, the Conmut are free to trade openly with the surrounding islands. They'll reward you with a single weapon of choice from their finest craftsman, and they'd be willing to be a part of your crew if you'd let them.

(I cannot find an accurate representation of the island online. And I am awful at drawing... and MS Paint. I do video editing okay? XD This isn't my thing, but it shows the general layout of what I had in mind.)

Isla de Mano
They all said it was just a tall tale. But it turns out, the legend was real. The island was said to be created by Poseidon himself as a symbol of his existence. Many people have been shipwrecked on the island and have turned up dead. They say that on a day with high tides, Poseidon and his minions come out to take out his wrath on any who dare set foot on the island. His minions are very dangerous creatures who take form of underwater wildlife and manipulate water to their own command. He is also said to have a treasure buried under the island and if you can find it it will contain the water gods very own trident (along with a very merry amount of gold) and you will have to use it to stand any chance at defeating Poseidon and bringing peace to the island. Your quest is to find this island and keep track of any strange or mystical occurences that happen on the island and find anything that would have any correspondence to Poseidon's appearances during high tides. You will also need to find the mythical Trident of Poseidon as a weapon to fight the water god himself. Make sure you bring along a crew to help in case it gets too rough with the water god or any of his minions. Will you find the source of the strange occurences on these islands? Or will you fall victim to the wrath of Poseidon?

(If the island were real, it would not have any buildings on it and would have a darker setting)

Are we required to have a questline? Or can we just make a backstory? :)

Also, you said no Disney characters. Does that include POTCO characters? (I personally don't intend to use any of them really, but just in case I figured I'd ask).

Does the island need to be entirely fictional? Part of what I've always enjoyed about POTCO was the relative historical roots of such islands as Port Royal and I know the Caribbean has a lot of rich history, if a real island were to be given a creative backstory.

Sticking with the main theme of what started POTCO and utlimately TLOPO

I would say create "Isla de Muerta" or Island of Death

According to Wikipedia "
Isla de Muerta is an island featured in the 2003 film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It is a mysterious land where the Black Pearl's pirate crew hide their looted treasure. It is filled with the cursed Aztec treasure that the pirates returned.

According to Jack Sparrow, Isla de Muerta (barbarized from a Spanish phrase meaning "Island of Death") is an island that cannot be found, except by those who already know where it is hidden. To locate it, Captain Sparrow uses his unique compass — rather than pointing north, it points to what its holder wants most. What Sparrow wants is his ship, the Black Pearl, anchored at the island and now captained by his mutinous first mate, Captain Barbossa.

Mysteriously shrouded in an everlasting fog, the isle is surrounded by a graveyard of sunken ships; its waters swarm with hammerhead sharks and shoaling fish.

From the air, the island resembles a human skull. It appears to be largely unexplored, save for interconnecting caves where Captain Barbossa's crew hoard their looted treasure. Here is where the dreaded Chest of Cortes containing the cursed Aztec gold lies hidden.

There seems to be little that is interesting on the island, apart from the caves and the hoarded treasure the Black Pearl crew has acquired during their many years of searching for the last cursed coin and the one remaining blood sacrifice.

In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, it's learned that the island was reclaimed by the sea, taking with it both the cursed Aztec treasure and the uncursed mountains of gold that Barbossa's crew had hoarded while they were cursed. It was with this gold that Jack Sparrow had agreed to pay his new crew, but had to change his plans when it sank with the island. Barbossa himself was only retrieved due to the intervention of Tia Dalma, who did so and also restored him to life before the events of Dead Man's Chest.

Like with Dead Man's Chest, the island is only mentioned in At World's End, by Barbossa as a reminder to Jack of their last confrontation.

Quests could be created first to find pieces to or craft the compass necessary to find the island, collect pieces of the cursed Aztec gold, that might actually force you to visit every other island and defeat enemies bosses or dig depending on the Island but encountering different character would give clues as to where different pieces of the treasure are located.... for example Joshamee Gibbs might explain that he overheard someone talking that they were on Isla Tormenta and his gold piece was stolen by a Kelpbrain.... or someone was fishing and their gold piece was swallowed by a lump fish... the possibilities would be left to your imagination.

There could be other quests that might lead you to the island at some point or another but you would not actually be able to get there until you actually find or construct the compass.

this image comes from DeviantArt but something similar in the game would be cool http://www.deviantart.com/art/Skull-Island-278479898

The end part of the quest would be to take all the collected gold pieces inside the skull like rock feature on the island and deposit them inside a chest... once all quests that pertain to the island are completed it would then sink into the sea with some kind of cool video denoting that it is no longer available as a destination
