Does the island need to be entirely fictional? Part of what I've always enjoyed about POTCO was the relative historical roots of such islands as Port Royal and I know the Caribbean has a lot of rich history, if a real island were to be given a creative backstory.
Nope :)
Are we required to have a questline? Or can we just make a backstory? :)

Also, you said no Disney characters. Does that include POTCO characters? (I personally don't intend to use any of them really, but just in case I figured I'd ask).
You can just make a backstory. And yes, that include POTCO characters

It sounds like a really neat contest but I am not that creative. I will try to think on it though I don't really care about a key, when the game goes full access they will bu useless.

Name: La Costa De la Sirena

Backstory:

There was once a mermaid who fell in love with a young sailor. They soon realized that their love couldn't exist anymore, because they were different creatures with separated worlds. So they found a beautiful island, and every night at 12 o'clock, she would sing her beautiful song, so that they could meet again. But one night, the mermaid sang her song, but there was no sign of her sailor. She then realized, that he was tragically killed in a ship encounter. She was truly devastated. The young mermaid tried everything. Dark voodoo to contact him from the grave, talking to the sea goddesses, but nothing worked. She soon realized that she wasn't complete without him, so she killed herself hoping that their ghosts would meet and until today, they still try to find each other. Pirates, sailors and traders found about this story, and to honor both of them, the called their meeting point : La Costa De la Sirena ( The coast of the mermaid ). It is said that if you hear closely every night at 12 o' clock, you can still hear her beautiful song, in an attempt to meet up with her long lost love.

Questline:

The pirate comes across a weird island. He/she explores the island, until they find the ghost of the mermaid. She greets the pirate and she begs him to help her reunite with her young sailor. The pirate accepts and sets off to Cuba to visit Tia Dalma, to ask for help. Tia Dalma first asks for some materials and something from another trader. The trader requests things as well and finally gives the pirate what Tia wanted. Later she makes a voodoo machine that tracks the sailor down. Then he is delighted with the pirate's news but says that he cannot leave his final resting place. To break this curse the pirate gets a certain voodoo staff from Tia ( after giving her the materials ) and sets the dead sailor free. The pirate takes him on his ship until they have reached the island. Then they reunite and the couple rewards the pirate.

Hello Pirates!
Best of luck to everyone!
Pirate Island; Libertalia
Back Story; also known as Libertatia) was a possibly fictional anarchist colony founded in the late 17th century in Madagascar by pirates under the leadership of Captain Henry Avery. Whether or not Libertatia actually existed is disputed. Isla de las Almas. The island of souls. The stories of the island can make even the toughest of pirates think twice about going there. A treasure so great, even the king himself could not match it rewards. But not everything is as great as it seems. The treasure lies in the heart of isla de las almas. No one dares try to take the treasure because of it protectors, the huanting souls of those who were lost there. The ancient savages who mysteriously disappeared, taking their entire city with them. The first pilgrams of the island from Spain, all found hoisted upon stakes. The crew of pirates who forced in front of the king's firing line, all dead with crimson streaks flowing from there eye sockets. And the sailors of the royal navy who were to fire upon the pirates, ravaged by a great wave and the rocks below. The sailors, torn and beaten from the rocky bottom of the sea, found dead on the beach. The souls of all those who went there now protect the island and its treasure. But what lies within the treasure you ask? And how did it get there? The island keeps collecting from those who go there, taking gold, weapons, and there souls. To this day no one has reached the treasure of the island. The only sailor to ever survived the island is Thomas Kraiges. You should go talk to him to learn more of this mystery. Trust me, you will know him when you see his stubby arm and wooden leg. Don't ask how he got them either lad. Good luck to ye. (Thomas Kraiges is a fictional character I just made up)

Name of the island: Siren Island

Shrouded in superstition, the island is a paradisiacal one that is initially very inviting. Clear blue water, lush forests, and foreboding cliffs, all lend themselves to an air of majesty. Many sailors cannot resist, and so they intend to sail into one of the gorgeous natural harbors and explore the island. But as one approaches, it becomes clear that others have had the same idea. Below the water lies a sea of skeletons and sunken ships. They are not very deep down, either; many crows' nests poke above the water still, crusted with barnacles and filth. When approaching one must take care to avoid these and the razor sharp coral just a few yards below the surface of the water. One bad move and the hull will be taking on more water than can be bailed, dooming the ship and its crew. Over some time, a few crews have made it to the shores, and have set up a small village, fearing that if they tried to sail over the graveyard again they would not make it. However, the island doesn't seem to be taking kindly to the human inhabitants, and paranormal happenings began as soon as the sailors began settling down. Disappearances, apparitions, and strange sounds from the forest in the night. Siren Island is named after a mythological creature, the Siren, as found in Homer's epic poem The Odyssey. In The Odyssey, the Sirens sit upon a rock in the ocean and sing. So beautifully, in fact, that the passing sailors are driven mad by the singing and must go find the source. They are disguised as beautiful women, making it all the more interesting for a sailor. They are very appealing, much as the island is, and so sailors are drawn towards them. The sailors then shipwreck on the Siren's island, just as the sailors shipwreck on Siren Island, only for a different reason.

Questline: Because of the strange things afoot (disappearances, apparitions, noises from the forests in the night), and the sailors' fear of leaving, they request someone not afraid of going to the island or leaving it to investigate. Adventure through the jungle, find missing people, and uncover the mystery of what the island is doing to its residents.

The island (imagine there is less modern civilization. This is Phi Phi island, in Thailand)

Los Roques A.K.A. Guild Island; Guilds name their own island.
Story Back:
Guild Island originates from Los Roques a little unknown group of islands off the coast of Venezuela. It's known for it's romantic views, beaches, mangrove lagoons, and hidden pirate treasure. As the fantasy goes the Island was taken over by pirates.
The Dutch pirate Blue Lagoon first sighted the Island as a place of refuge for his crew. He set up his own Town and declared himself Governor.
He also offered the Island as sanctuary for other pirates for a share of their bounty captured on the high seas. He quickly became rich, famous, and feared by the provincial governments.
As time passed and various mysterious incidents they discovered they were not alone. On the other side of the Island there was a tribe of Amazon woman. The Governor sent out several search parties but none of them never returned.
To this day there is still a line through the center of the Island which serves as a warning to all not to enter the forbidden land.

If it becomes a game segment:
A Guild can win their own island from a series of quests to the point of fighting off game peaces to win the island.
Once won it becomes a place to gather & party on with their own venders, pubs, forts, caves, and places to hide treasure. The island should have a design menu where select players from the guild can add objects. Starting off simple and growing with design requests.

If non-guild players can find the island they can become friends or; play PvP, steal treasure, hold ships for ransom ect...

The Pic comes from Black Dog Pirates Island Play Mat. It reflects the general idea of the layout.

I also made an island in MS paint. I call it the Sundered Isles... or Fish Head Island.

STORY:
A long time ago, in an ocean imagined, two certain pirates, lets call them "Luke" and "Vader", were having a fishing contest in the former Fishland Island-Amusement park. Well, one of the fish tangled the two fishermen's lines, which started a heated argument about who caught the biggest fish, and who also tangled their lines. Then they noticed the Fish, and decided to have one last competition. Vader acted first, grabbed his Cutlass, and slashed the water. That did nothing, so Luke took his turn and used a throwing spear to skewer the fish. To
Vader's surprise, the spear hit the fish! Vader and Luke had a nice chat over a plate of Godfish Tacos. What is left of the fish is the head, which over time grew into the island that appears to have been sundered, hence the name Sundered Isles.

Nobody knows what happened to Fishland, but many assume it was a Navy base...

(That took a LOT of my imagination...)

Island name: Kami (Japanese for Divine)

There is some evidence that the Japanese could've potentially discovered the western coast of America. I'm gonna put it into justification that a few soldiers survived the trip to the Gulf of Mexico, with the guidance of the Natives. After building themselves a ship, they made their way towards the Caribbean. They then settled on an island south of the western edge of Cuba, called the Island of Youth in present day. The Japanese then settled this island, creating an outpost to spread Japanese culture. They named it "Kami" in respect to all the gods that they worship. Unfortunatly, the English army and the EITC also think that it would be a good place to settle as well. Now the groups fight for the island.

Quest Line: Japanese ninja take more pride in stealth than murder, with killing being the last resort. The quest line associated with said island would feature quests that feature you having to sneak around enemies to get to NPCs to obtain information. What if you kill an enemy on the way there? You would get a warning you just resorted to murder, and if you do so again, you would have to exit the area and try again to complete the quest. What you will be doing is trying to turn the Navy and EITC against eachother on the island, creating a Civil War that would make both groups leave the island. Your reward? A legendary Japanese katana: the Masamune. Good luck to all entering

Name: Altairzica

Backstory: Originally mentioned in Native American mythology as the home of the Hurricane Spirit, this island has always been a source of bad luck for anyone who has tried to inhabit it. By the time the year 1621 came along, a group of prisoners arrived from a Dutch prisoner ship that had capsized off the island’s coast. These prisoners swam to shore and began to set up a few buildings. They lived there for quite some time, until word caught wind in Britain of the settlement on the island. The year 1678 marked the year that the British began to take over the island, placing an appointed government official on the island to enslave the prisoners who lived there. The primary export of the island is cane sugar, which is often sold to the American colonies for quite a cheap price.

Questline: As a pirate, you first hear of this island from a man named Capt. Reddeagle. Capt. Reddeagle is the island’s head merchant, who occasionally can be seen on Port Royal. Capt. Reddeagle first asks you to do some various supply runs to get new canvas for his ship. After you have gained his trust, he then tells you that he plans to overthrow the British presence of the island. You eventually visit the island yourself, and meet with many of the enslaved prisoners, ultimately leading them in a successful revolt.
After the revolt, as a side quest, you are tasked by Capt. Reddeagle to look further into the old Native American mythology. After talking to various people and eventually finding a map, you eventually discover an amulet buried on the Northwest side of the island that can manipulate the ocean’s currents: the Amulet of the Tide.

La Muerte Sea Dicha: "Death Be Told" - in english.
This dreadful illuminating island is where the end of the world begins. La Muerte was stumbled apon by a wife of an exile that was banished from Cuba. Her punishment was to be thrown off the edge of the world. On the 7th day of voyage the war brig, "Casters soul" sailed into a green mysterious fog. The ship crew drew their weapons just as the ship crashed into La Muerte. The wife that was tied to the mast broke free and ran off into the island. several crew members chased after her but none ever made it back to the ship. The wife collapsed to the floor in the dense forest and placed a curse on this island. All ships that send people to the edge of the world would be sent here and all exiles would make it safely to the town in the center of the island but any crew that tried to follow them would die by the purple poison air, their bodies would die but their souls would linger, any living creature that died by this purple air would turn into a spectral enemy and guard the island from anyone trying to reach the center, for it holds time in place, anyone who lives their becomes immortal. In order to break this curse a pirate must first battle spectral ships surrounding the island, then the souls of sailors on the beach and as he journys deeper into the forrest he will be attacked by the ghost of alligators, plants, bugs, and moving purple clouds of death. Once the pirate makes it to the center where thousands of living exiles live, he can stay their for eternity or fight his way through the town and find the wife that stays in the church. This story is a work of fiction written by me about the background of my Island. All specific characters are fictional and all ties to any existing characters is completely coincidental (except for Cutler Beckett). Please enjoy!
This is Insel der Leiden (Island of Suffering). It was a one of the most prosperous trading islands, during the rule of Cutler Beckett, for it's luscious diamonds, gems, and large quantities of tobacco. As Beckett became more entranced with the island, his lust for the harvest grew. He began using captured pirates and natives as slaves to quickly harvest such materials; however, Beckett didn't know about the natives' knowledge and wisdom of the island. Hundreds of years earlier, this island was discovered by Merich Alfreinz, a mysterious pirate who's origins were not known. Merich used the island as a storage for his loot that he acquired over his years of pirating. When the British discovered this island in the late 17th century, it was filled with magnificent resources.

The one thing the British did not know about was the curse that was left on the island. This isn't like the curse that was bestowed upon Barbossa, this was much different. The curse is that all ancestors of Merich Alfreinz had knowledge of this island and knew it by heart. They knew were everything was and they knew what everybody was doing at all times. Any ancestor also had the ability to take control of any native or animal at any time. When they were in control of another being, that being could not die. The interesting thing is that an ancestor could bestow the power on any crew member, though the power would not pass through there bloodline. As Cutler Beckett's urge to conquer the island grew, so did the anger of one of Alfreinz ancestors, a German pirate by the name of Falke (Hawk). Captain Falke was enraged with the destruction caused by Beckett so in an act of rage, he led an assault on the island. With a fleet of 4 ships, totaling a crew of roughly 160 men, he led an organized attack. 60 men stayed on the ships and controlled the natives and animals of the island, whereas the other 100 men went into battle. With their brutish fighting style and the power of the natives, Captain Falke and his crew slaughtered Beckett's army and defenses. Over 300 British soldiers were killed with the loss of only 10 pirates. As the natives thanked Captain Falke for his help in fending off the British, he had a change of heart. He plotted a celebration feast for the natives. A few days passed preparing for the feast and then the night finally came. Captain Falke offered a toast. Speaking in English, he said, "To suffering!" Before the natives could react, the pirates cut the throats of every native at the feast. No natives survived that night.

Captain Falke planned to stay on the island until his death, but things did not plan out so well. That same night the trees whispered Merich is disappointed and You are no Alfreinz. The moon turned a shade of green in a matter of seconds and the water turned blood red. The crew and especially Captain Falke were now terrified. The began to run towards their ships but before they reached them, they were engulfed in white flames. Suddenly, a crack of lightning struck the sand. A green ghost walked out of a large palm tree on the beach. It was the ghost of Merich Alfreinz. Once he stepped onto the sand he appeared human again. He stood 6'7 and had numerous scars on his face. He reached to his belt and drew a sword with a handle made of ivory that was encrusted with emeralds. The sword also featured a blade of a black diamond. The sword itself was named Oathkeeper, for the need to keep the oath to kill any traitor to the bloodline. Falke fell to his knees. He begged and begged for mercy, but none was given. Merich raised his blade and with a single swing cut Falke in two. The crew tried to flee. Those who ran into the water were quickly devoured by sharks and other beasts, and those who ran into the forest were quickly killed by the animals and other wildlife. The members who decided to stay and fight the Merich were easily dispatched. Soon after this carnage, the moon returned to it's off-white color, the water turned blue and the captain faded away into the forest.

The island is named Insel der Ledien (Island of Suffering) for all of the death and despair that occurred on the island. The reason it is in German is because of Captain Falke's heritage and because he was the one that truly caused all of the carnage.

This next bit includes a quest-line for the island (don't worry, it won't be as long)! I also will include a list of possible enemies and bosses. Enjoy!

The quest-line revolves around a deal your pirate makes with Cutler Beckett. Beckett wants you to go to the island and check to see where his scouts have been disappearing to, in return Beckett will reward you with a pardon for all of your crimes against the EITC and the British Empire. After sailing to the mysterious island, your pirate will then complete a series of quests to uncover where the scouts have disappeared to. Your pirate will have to fight many natives as you dive deeper into the forest of Insel der Ledien. You will also begin to find strange animals and plants that the curse has touched, that left them permanently tarnished. After going deep into the forest, your pirate uncovers cave. The cave is filled with skeletons of Beckett's scouts.

You then quickly return to Beckett where yo give him the news. Beckett is not surprised and orders a raid on the island. You sail with. Upon returning to the island, your pirate and Beckett notice a blockade of Merich's ships. He raised his crew from the dead and vowed to protect to island with his own ships and men instead of trusting his unfaithful descendants. Your pirate has to fight off Merich's crew mates as you try your hardest to get to the beach. The first attempt fails. You and Beckett retreat and realize you need a stronger ship. You then need to go to the various existing islands in the game and plunder other ships to gather materials for a "super ship" one that can withstand the constant bombardment of the pirates.

After building this ship, you return to the island where, to no surprise, is Merich's fleet. With the newly built super ship, you and Beckett easily erase Merich's fleet. As you beach on the island, it is the same as before. Merich is no where to be seen. Your pirate needs to earn the trust of the natives by killing numerous EITC goons, you are unsure of the concept and go to Beckett and explain this treason. Beckett condones the action for he will do whatever is necessary to defeat Merich. You plunder a few EITC ships and kill a few EITC bosses spanning the different islands.

After trust is earned, the natives help yo find Merich. A series of steps is required to summon him and when you do, he comes out of the same palm tree that he did when he killed Captain Falke. There is then a massive battle against your pirate and Merich as well as well as the EITC and the crew. After a long battle, you appear victorious. Merich drops his sword and you take it as a prize (or the sword disappears and it can be looted at a later time).
What happens next is up to you devs!

Enemies:
  • Native fighters
  • Merich's crew
  • Wolves and other animals
  • Cursed plants
  • BOSS Captain Merich
  • BOSS Captain Falke (post story)
Weapons:
  • Oathkeeper
  • The pistol of Captain Merich
  • The sword of Captain Falke
  • The pistol of Captain Falke
Ship:
  • The Stone

Thank you very much for reading! I hope you enjoyed it! Please consider my entry for the game because I think it would be an awesome island and story!

I know I went way over the word limit and I included a character from the movies. It is okay to disqualify me but I just really wanted to share a really cool idea I have been thinking of over the years. Thank you.

Name - Terrae Angues (means land of snakes in latin)
Backstory:
It was a jolly day for Captn. Booker Drake the lootin was good and the rum better, after hours of getting drunk and playing cards at Le Boudeguita something happened, something that the EITC had never dared to do, storm a pirate dominated Island. It was for the purpose to catch a legend, a king, a myth, Captn. Booker Drake or as they called him Dancin' Drake for his unmatched piracy on the high seas. Lucky the EITC were that night as they did catch Booker Drake, but also his right hand men Finn Ramsay and Patty O'Meier. The EITC knew the danger of these two, the only option was exile to a seldom visited place ruled by a snake-man called Leema, a place grown from pure malice and poison, Terrae Angues.... A place so feared nobody had dared go where legend stated it was located. Nobody knew if it was even real, but soon to be found out, it was. Legend has it that when Dancin' Drake, O'Meier, and Ramsay where dropped off a they had found snakes everywhere, under every rock, every peice of driftwood. The Island was rocky, the tops of the mounts jagged. That first week they took refuge in a cave two of them slept while one watched not one snake ever came near that cave for some odd reason, that's where the name Securus Ab Anguibus (secure from snakes) originated. They say Captn. Booker Drake was the first one to die only after 18 months, then Ramsay after 47, but O'Meier was there when a crew of pirates found them. They turned the rocky island into a hub, O'Meier continues to welcome pirates for some rum in the tavern and tell his stories to this day. While the ghosts of Dancin' Drake and Ramsay roam the island, O'Meier claims he can talk to them and that they say the great evil, Leema, resides in the caves. A crew called, Drake's Legacy, is recruiting pirates to explore the caves to find and kill the snake-man will you be the next member.......?

Questline:
Ask O'Meier to join Drake's Legacy -> he tells you to kill 20 snakes -> tells you to talk to Finn Ramsay's ghost -> tells you to sink the ship that brough him here -> then Ramsay tells you to talk to Captn. Booker Drake's ghost -> he tells you to find his sword -> you return the sword and he tells O'Meier to recruit you -> you are now recruited you begin to explore the caves -> you find Leema's Den and kill Leema

Island Name: Caverna darnati, (Latin for: Cavern of the Condemned)

Before pirates found treasure from the values of gold and silver, they plundered the oceans for the more natural wonders of the world. Specifically, they sought precious stones and pearls known to be larger than the fists of a ship's carpenter, loot that had value in beauty and size. The greatest pirate lords agreed that with the binding of the gods, the ocean became an easier place to command among themselves, allowing all their ventures to become more and more profitable. Those pirate lords agreed on a fortress and cache for the greatest discoveries. A place where information on the secrets of the oceans and the skills of sailing and wielding magic were collected for the use of only the fiercest of pirates. As the cache grew, greed again began to divide the union of pirates, blind-wealth obliviating the collective spirit that ran through the sailors of the world. The gods of Earth, once weakened by the collective magic of the pirate lords, regained strength enough to form a control, a punishment. A leviathan formed into being, carved from the underwater cliffs and essence of the oceans creatures, the Lusca. It's power came from the storms that swallowed the sky, and ripped the wind into shards of whirling lightning. It would patrol from the depths awaiting the pirates, turned vicious, and suck their ships into the crushing waves through vast whirlpools. When rumour pervaded the swells and travelled to port of a new beast, the pirate lords thought safe their bounty, and all came to the secret island that housed their priceless fortunes to hold court. The gods perceived this action and urged the Lusca, a creature so powerful they couldn't command, to the underwater caves that hid below the fortress. In one night, the creature produced its potent maelstrom and hurricane and incised the middle of the island to the bottom of Earth's crust, expelling pieces of the treasure and fortress out from the hole and across the Caribbean. The one pirate lord, who had resisted his corruption, was the only the only one spared. The gods using their last tensile strength sheltered him. He returned to the remaining husk of the island, holding the last pieces of the all-but-lost knowledge of old, awaiting there to teach the first pirate king the secrets of pirate skill and history. He guards the only piece of remaining treasure, a stone of paraiba tourmaline the size of a human skull, hidden somewhere on the island or in the hidden caverns.

Quest: Use hints and secrets hidden around the islands of the Caribbean (Having been thrown everywhere...) proving your conviction and loyalty, to determine where on the island the last original pirate lord awaits, and what happened to The Lusca.

I know I went way over the limit and I used a character from the movies. It is okay to disqualify me but I really wanted to share what I thought was a cool story and idea!

Isla Del La Vunerta

The Legend
Just beyond the Isla Tormenta, lies another island - shrouded in mystery and darkness, a name that cannot be translated. One says it's where voodooists concocts their strongest magics, another says it's an island cursed with the dead souls of greedy men who sought the treasures deep underground. Who knows? Truth be known is that nobody can step foot on it, and come back the same. The aura of the island has intrigued many.

"Those who wander are not lost..." That saying holds no truth here, for if you dared to step, you dared to sink.

Sink forever in shadow.

Good luck traveler.

A Dare for You
If those who think they are brave enough, and can survive the torture of souls sceaming in your ears. You should bring back a token of proof that you went and returned. Perhaps a chest of gold? Or maybe something more... intriguing? Like, perhaps a corpse. Yes, a corpse of the first victim of the island should suffice. Scared yet?
