Smasho is quite glitched. Loot doesn't always appear where he spawns. Sometimes it sinks below the cave, so you have to glitch through a wall to get underneath the entire cave system.
I looted him a couple times today. Unfortunately, sometimes the loot glitches so you can't see it at all--you have to go on a scavenger hunt to find the "Shift to open loot pouch" message on your screen. Sometimes you can only see the particles. It's not fun, but as you can see from MarkPlankwalker's post, the loot is definitely worth it.
