Python. Utilizing the Panda3D game engine which is open source here --> https://github.com/panda3d/panda3d

They're also elements of POTCO that are written in C++ the water for example utilizes C++ to generate waves and shift the UV's to give it's apperance.

Do you ever tweak any code for personal satisfaction? ever think about getting a job for them?
I've personally worked with variations of the original potco client code, have no interest in working on this project however.

Panda3D, literally the worst engine possible. (No joke)
No, it's not. Panda3D is a VERY powerful game engine, it just is slightly outdated. It lacks a lot of the more common features attributed to game engines, such as a prepackaged scene editor; but it is still incredibly powerful. You as the programmer must do more work in order to use it, but you can have a significantly larger target audience using an engine like Panda.

Although, there's many reasons that a programmer chooses a specific game engine over another. So your engine choice heavily depends on what you're specifically needing to accomplish.

For example, these are in Panda3D:

Yes, I see the comparison.

  1. You're playing in what looks to be low graphics settings.
  2. TLOPO is not optimized to work with the latest capabilities of the Panda3D game engine. Why? POTCO was designed in 2004, not 2018.
  3. TLOPO likely won't update the graphics to support the latest features because there's a nostalgia factor to the game the way it is.

Just wanted to come and say that yes, TLOPO (and POTCO) were and are run on Python with the exception of certain C++ portions to do some more heavy lifting within the Panda3D engine.

Wass is exactly right. Potco's design started really early (think right after toontown). That being said, it was built to run on most every computer available at the time.

Also, @Mike Wass I love the shots that using that render pipeline. Here's an image from a game that eventually moved to a different engine but still looked amazing using P3D.

The top two are photos correct? At least the car may be, cause no one has that kind of detail, maybe even the mountains. I saw one of the top race sims at the store the other day, on a 4K and a monster graphic system and although truly amazing, I could still perceive the digital.

Number 3 is interesting. How about the devs update the graphics totally, and allow people to download one or the other, you know for nostalgia factors. I've nothing to be nostalgic about as this is my first tlopo. If I want nostalgia graphics, I'll go play the original doom or minecraft. I get the classic look thing, but a lot of people love this game and would like it to play smoother. Updating to todays features I think would allow 'smoothness' to be enjoyed.
