Game Resolution Change?

River

Wanted Pirate
I was watching a video of POTCO back in it's early days of release. In the video, I noticed that the ships (and everything else, but mostly the ships) looked "fatter" or my "bulgy". It looked more polished and realistic (in my opinion). If you take a look at the modern day game, everything looks so "skinny" and "lean" and looks a lot more "brighter". So I guess I am wondering was it because of resolution, or was it because of something else? Either way, I really really like the older look. I took a couple screenshots to show the difference.

Also, do any of you notice how in the old game the ships were floating in the water instead of just barely hovering over it?

The later screenshot definitely has higher resolution (you can tell this easily by looking at the space between different HUD elements, like between the skill bar and the options buttons).

However this isn't directly related to the ships looking leaner. That's the result of an increase in FOV, or Field Of View.

These may be linked (which would be weird). It's entirely possible FoV increases more than it should when you increase your resolution. Someone should test that (I cannot, no access to PC right now).

More likely, I think at some point the FoV was increased for everyone.

As for the ships floating differently, yeah I remember feeling way more immersed in sailing way back when. I remember it was beautiful, with the rocking ships and the waves. My memory isn't good enough for the specifics though. Additionally my knowledge in game development is lacking when it comes to graphics (to include shaders and effects), and stuff like water is beyond me. Fixing "hovering above it" could be as simple as lowering the ships a little, but honestly I can't remember the difference here and I can barely see your screenshots on my little phone.

I'm still taking in the view of that sky to be honest. Goodness that looks great (there is a thread somewhere that has shots of the old sky--- very "pretty").

There's a "Fancy Sky" option in graphics. Does that return the old sky?

Obviously none of us play with it, because fancy options sound like they mean "crash more often? Y/N", but nonetheless these beautiful skies may still be in the game. Remember time of day matters!

Those two videos the screenshots were taken from are probably using different graphics settings.

I remember playing game 2007 on my moms compaq computer(a few years old at that time...the computer...not me^^) and the monitor was the size of a tank! Had great graphics I thought at the time... our newer wide screen monitors are awesome tho... but I took great screenshots back then.

i also noticed the water difference

Use full graphics then take screenshot, also at same day cycle sunset and roughly same angle. With same ship class too.

Figured it out, it was the resolution. I changed my resolution to the lowest 800x600 and the game had the nice bulgy look, the only problem is that it looks "grainy". On highest graphics though, the sky looks no where near as beautiful as the old game's.
