How does one tag a member

How does one tag a member such as @blahblahson.
When I see someone tagged me.

Just write an @ and then a username, like @squintz

He doesn't even know me.

No worries @squintz , you didn't tag them, otherwise his name would appear in red. Because that user doesn't exist, they weren't tagged!

lol. Thanks. Hey, what exactly does tagging do for me when I tag someone? I actually tried to look this up on the wiki and didn't really find anything explicit.

It just sends them an alert that you tagged them, it's only a forum thing so it wouldn't be on the wiki.
