QUESTION:

As a ex-POTCO player and community fan, would you support an individual receiving money (or a 'project' affiliated with said individual receiving money) from an abandoned Disney work - namely POTCO - to where the transaction itself provides for you complete ownership over an item, virtual good, creative work, access/control to a creative work, or service not associated from anyone employed by Disney?

A reminder:

Our community is unique in addition to being special. Speaking in terms of demographics alone, our community fosters kids, teens, young adults, and adults. *In light of any personal entitlement or gain, the possibility is real in that a kid online - somewhere - could ultimately be exploited by the handing over of their own "lunch-money" (depending upon whether you feel such circumstance warrants concern or not)!

Thank You. :thanks:

Never to play, or for any material thing in return. Maybe as a friendly donation once proven the project is legitimate and can do what they promise. That is if they accepted such things out of the kindness of my own heart and will for the game to keep running.

It's important to consider that paying any 3rd party for projects derived from Disney property (code/textures/models/audio) puts the very existence of such projects at risk.

Disney may be kind enough to allow private servers to exist, so long as they're not profiting from the works and help to keep fans happy. We shouldn't take that for granted, and we shouldn't do anything that has the potential to jeopardize it.

Monetizing a remake of POTCO is first and foremost, illegal. That being said, there is absolutely no way I would support or pay for a POTCO remake that makes money like that. It's sleazy, illegal, and quite simply just downright stupid.

I'll be honest, I've kinda moved on from POTCO. ~ Even if it was re-opened by Disney to it's 'great' "Never" updating after 2009 glory, and I would still not consider playing it.

thing about the internet is that trust is a flimsy thing. and i pressume you're not suppose to support or assist anyone with anything another than then a two-dimensional "good luck; just don't talk trash about the project/devs/community or else." if this is in affiliation with pear, or anyone who else of shady repute, of course not.

but if a potco remake/boot/regen is the launching point for a free-from-disney-pirate game and funds are needed to support a 90%-'kid'-created-game-with-maybe-one-or-two-adults-who-have-the-financial-means-to-create/sustain-the-game, then yes, a crowdfunding campaign should be created to support the team in a non-disney affiliated venture which the potco project is used/seen as a portfolio into the teams gifts and talents.

Making money on a remake should be outta the question. Making the remake itself is illegal, profiting on it would no doubt have repercussions.

I'd like to say on my own accord my stance on this for several reasons.

I think I'd be alright with the idea that people can willingly donate (Like a Bernie Sanders campaign finance structure) should they choose to the party if it were to be considered under the right circumstances legal.

Now of course truth is that it isn't legal in any way. I personally disagree with the idea (simply because I disagree with copyright after you profit so much off of your work) but under current circumstances I wouldn't donate much less pay them. I like to make the distinguishment of donations and payment because I see a POTCO Remake as one and one thing only: a non profit organization. Logically if you think of any non-profit organization they take donations but they don't obviously abuse the money and use it on themselves.

It's another thing, though we can all agree on, what Deleted member 4172 does is not quite possibly questionable.... It is. Period. The thing is it won't be taken into account since he's too small of a fish to fry for Disney if he is even on radar for them.

While I'd love to reward the tlopo team for their work and thus convey my thanks and encourage steady updates-- I can't read Disney's mind and therefore I don't trust them not to misconstrue the donations as payments/funding with a different name. It has happened in the past and other companies have shut down remakes for less despite having no intention of bringing the game back themselves. Which strikes me as needlessly cruel to the folk who wish to engage with the old content again, but I'm not a business man.

While the argument that as PotcO wouldn't be financially viable for Disney to bring back with their old monetization methods and therefore Disney would hardly take action against a remake of what they consider a dead game does indeed hold water, I personally don't want to incur the wrath of Disney's higher-ups over a few pennies just yet.

Until the project is finished and the developers can have an active dialogue with Disney regarding the status of the game, we might have to find other ways of thanking the team for their patience with us and their work in bringing back a game in uncertain waters (no pun intended)

My vote is a temporary "No" until we have a finished or nearly finished game with which to gain Disney's respect for the effort.

i wonder if the devs would change their minds and consider receiving donations at some point.

yes, the project is a gift. and yes, it's a hobby for them. but even the server needs money and the webpage & forums need hosting. unless those three are extremely cheap to maintain, i can understand them feeling that there's no outstanding need for financial assistance ((similarly to a friend driving you 2-5 hrs to a concert that you both love and they may not think gas won't make a major dent in their wallet)).

however, if the traffic on the website and the amount of members who have recently joined pf.co due to tlopo, won't there need to be a major adjustment for server/running costs for the game, especially if they want this to have some sort of longevity?
