You can turn your graphics lighter, it helps a bit... I always change mine for HW

What you're experiencing in this screenshot is the lighting that occurs during invasions, adding a dark haze on top of the already dimly lit environment inside the hovel. That being said, if the lighting after the invasion has ended is still too dark for you, I would recommend modifying the gamma via your computer's internal control panel to alleviate the eye strain.
