After the game is finished (after beta or when the developers decide to add).
I believe new ships should be added so that players can have a bigger variety in ships to choose from. Therefore, TLOPO would have a more diverse community instead of everyone sailing in the same ship.
Seeing the same sloops, galleons and frigates everyday gets pretty boring. I understand it will take a while for TLOPO to be considered "finished" but I think these are pretty cool ships I think should be implemented into the game. Even if you do not like these certain ships, I encourage the development team to look into a bigger variety of ships than the 12 we currently have.

TL;DR: More ships = Bigger variety.

1. Schooners (Sloop with 2 masts)

I like the schooner idea- a light schooner has 2 masts. Medium has 3, and then a war schooner having 4.
It would be cool to add some far East ships, like the Junk and turtle ship...
 
The turtle ship would be a lightly armed but super heavily armored ship with a nice cargo hold- like a nice cargo-tank... only downside would be the one or two masts it has at maximum- it was designed to be oar powered.

Haha not really. The rigging is completely different. So are the characteristics. Honestly, I don't know why POTCO ever named the brig class ship "brig." Brigs were quite small, delicate ships similar to sloops.

Yeah, but in smaller skirmishes, they were the jack of all trades ships. The anglo-Dutch war in the 18th century I think had a great example of that. I still feel that the power tree should go sloops<brigs<galleon<frigate. The power of Galleons and frigates could be debated though...
 
I agree. More ships would be very cool. It would definetly give players the ability to express their sailing style more. However, I think we need to keep in mind the time period. The Carrack (Very much the same as a Caravel just different rigging) for example became quite obsolete with the invention of the galleon. But this is a game so maybe I'm being a bit too technical.

I think it should stay slightly true to history, but perhaps you are right. The carrack and Caravel were used during the time of the gallons, but mainly as transport and light warships again.

In recorded history, nothing above a 4th or 5th rate frigate was ever captured by a pirate. Ships of the line were generally 3rd rate and up. But it would be a good counter-ship to the treasure fleets in game.
