Correct me if I'm wrong @Davy Darkrage @John Foulroberts , but what does this does I believe is that it hides your activities from public view and does not show up in the recent activity. Or it may just be that if you don't want your followers to see your activity, you can disable that. Again... not exactly sure, and I haven't seen that, so I don't exactly know what you're referring to.

In short when you uncheck that it prevents people from receiving your news feed I.E your forum activity.

For example i'm following MMDR so when i look at my news feed i can see pretty much her entire activity (Topics made, comments made, likes given etc).

Now if MMDR had that option turned off following her would definitely not let me see her entire news feed (Again pretty much her entire forum activity).
