Phase Files

So people don't steal them and use them to create another emulator using TLOPO's source
Anybody can get the resources, Atleast disneys it's not that hard to find you don't really even need to decompile them, They're posted online in multiple places.

Not the phase_1 tho

Phase files and source code are entirely two different things. As it's been said above getting your hands on POTCO's phase files shouldn't be that hard given to the fact that people have shared those across the Internet. The latter is no-go. The server-side of the game is something that TLOPO developers wrote themselves from the ground up. And it's entitled to them ~ Those files are private and will continue to be so

You guys changed something in the phase files and now they can't be extracted I literally just want to use the resources

Yeah I don't understand why phase_2 through phase_5 error out now when trying to extract them. They contain the assets not the source code for the game and are useful for fan-made creations. I could more so understand creating a phase_6 and putting custom TLOPO assets in there and password protecting it or such, though it still hinders fan-made creations, it would be more understandable.

I also don't understand how resource packs will even be feasible now. When they are eventually™ released, how are content creators going to know what to name their custom sound and texture files, and how to format them?

If its because my panda3d repo needs updating I apologize, but I kinda doubt they updated multify.exe after all this time.

I'm assuming the cause of the error is due to the fact that you aren't supplying multify with the encryption key that TLoPO uses when building the assets for the built and distributed client. Of course, no one outside of of the development team has access to this key (I'm assuming the key is also in the source code when the game is reading the assets from the phase files, but the chances of anyone decompiling the client are slim to none).

As for why TLoPO is doing this, I'm not exactly sure. I extracted them a while back but I'm not sure where I have them anymore (not that I plan on giving them out, it's not my assets and I don't have permission to do so).

I know that they want to protect their assets from a certain remake. But if they were stolen, we would all know that they were TLOPO's. That remake is dead anyways and is only an annoyance. Is it really worth it to protect a few custom assets that we all know belong to TLOPO from some irrelevant remake, hindering community creations? Or is it more worth it to just keep the assets open so that things like resource packs, animations, non-remake community projects, etc are possible?

I personally would say the latter. And I believe Disney would say so too, if they didn't think so they would have used the builtin encryption multify has.

I honestly disagree with the above. For as long as there is malicious intent, I believe that locking away your work is warranted. If TLOPO has plans to expand the game after full release, they are going to be creating their own content. It seems reasonable for them to keep their own εfforts hidden from public's eye.

Right now and judging from game's content, the phase files should be identical to Disney's ones so it should not matter much which files you might have in your possession.

Innocents should not be punished for the wrongdoing of one person. We all know this person is bad, he is hated even among TLOPO haters. Stifling one potential avenue for fan-made works is never a good decision for anything. Fan-made art, content, and media is what makes things last much much longer than they normally would. I would cite the numerous examples in gaming such as every Bethesda made game ever, GTA V, Mount and Blade, Portal 2, Dark Souls, even a remake like TTR, etc etc the list goes on and on. But it should be obvious that the more avenues the community has to make and enjoy fan-made content the longer and more relevant the game will stay.

But it's the wrongdoing of an entity that affect the rest of the community. I don't wanna do the witch's hunt or anything but I personally believe that TLOPO did their best for that matter given to the resources they have. They are not a gaming corporation or a colossus so I'd rather not compare them with other video games out there.

I understand how you feel. I have a copy of Disney's phase files myself and I too have to admit that you can that you can produce some pretty neat artistic work if you have the required skills. In fact, if you take a look at my current signature, I have used the papyrus from the in-game content to write on my today's responsibilities. Many can argue regarding that matter and that's respectable but I feel that the more they do to protect their own work and content, the more the game will last. And for this, I'm willing to make the sacrifice.

The wrongdoing of that entity only affects this community because we continue to acknowledge it and act like its some kind of threat, rather than a joke, which it is. Them taking the base model of say, Isla Escondida, would first of all do them no good because they lack the skill or even initiative to write the complimentary world data that must go with it. And second would be an immediate red flag because it's obviously TLOPO's original work. And third, in the end it will be like some bootlegged pirated movie recorded in a movie theater at 240p. No one will care.

However opening these resources up will allow people like myself, and anyone else who is interested enough to create fan content. Obviously we can use the POTCO files to accomplish much the same thing. But fan content specific to TLOPO will be nonexistent.

I too am a content creator, I've had my work essentially stolen and abused by the same entity. Would that stop me from publicly releasing what I have to the public for them to do what they want with it because I value fan interaction? No. If I were ever to make something similar again I would fully release what I have in a way that people could make what they want with it. Just like I did the last time.

I'm not really going to argue the point any further as I've said all that can be said.

Don't worry, we'll provide an official tool to make content packs in the future.
so there will be something like the steam workshop in the future?

I was hoping to being able to extract them and convert them for gmod playermodels or something along the lines of that

You can just get the potco client, take the phase files and extract them using the multify tool from panda.
