Initial Release of the TLOPO Test Server - 12/22/2019

Announcements:

  • This is the initial release of The Legend of Pirates Online’s Test Server.
  • We have spent the past two years combing through the game’s source code and optimizing it. We have rewritten large parts of the codebase to bring the game up to date with modern hardware capabilities.
  • Virtually every aspect of the game has been edited in some way by us. This is a massive update with literally tens of thousands of changes have been made. Every single feature in the game, no matter how small, needs to be tested.
  • The best way we can describe this release is that we’ve basically redone everything behind the scenes literally everything. Because of this, gameplay should just feel better. This is largely a performance update.
Highlights:
  • The Capture the Chest Expansion is now available for testing!
  • Lobbies, the Capture the Chest game mode, and Meetups are now live!
  • The Black Pearl Boss Battle has been fixed!
  • Poker and Blackjack Instances have been fixed!
  • Team PvP has been fixed!
  • This update adds a massive performance improvement to the game: Higher FPS, faster load times.
  • The graphics in the game have been significantly improved -- to just call them amazing is an understatement, go check them out for yourself!
Features:
  • Lobbies are now available for testing! Lobbies are a full replacement for the original Pirates Online Lookout Matchmaker system.
  • An all-new game mode called Capture the Chest is available for testing!
    • The team with the most chest captures wins; but be warned, ye can't capture yer opponents while yer own isn't at yer base! Defend yer base and become infamous!
  • A brand new “Adventures” game type has been released along with its very first gamemode, Meetups!
    • We plan on adding more new game modes into the Adventures category over time, such as "Survivalist".
  • Meetups are a central gathering point in the game for players, featuring a bunch of new in-game locations!
    • These new locations are in varying stages of development. Don’t be surprised if some are empty or missing content.
    • We also plan on porting over just about every Meetup location to the Parlor Games lobby type. Keep an eye out for that soon.
  • Meetups are a central gathering point in the game for players, featuring a bunch of new in-game locations!
  • We have created 15 new Find-A-Crew types.
    • Examples: Cursed Looting, Ship Materials, Privateering.
  • Players can now select the team they wish to play on in Team PvP Game Modes!
  • New Objective Infamy Track!
    • Play Capture the Chest matches to earn this new series of Infamy badges, and purchase all-new rewards from Rose Cabinmenace on Tortuga, near Butcher Brown!
  • Challenges are now available for testing!
    • This is a prototype we’ve had on our Quality Assurance server for a while now, but it is by no means polished and hasn’t been a priority of ours for a long time. It doesn’t break anything though, so why not enable it?
    • We intend to have a larger revamp for Challenges down the line, with better rewards and more relevant competitions.
  • Pet potions are now available for testing!
  • These are still very early-on in development. We will be updating these over time.
Maintenance:
  • Updated the game engine to Panda3D to 1.11.
    • This brings massive performance improvements, improved graphics, crisper text, and so much more.
  • The client has been rewritten to support Python 3.
  • Textures are now written in a way that minimizes the number of seeks during reading operations. This results in significantly improved texture read speeds.
  • Optimized our encryption model to increase performance.
  • JPG and OGG resources are no longer compressed.
  • We are now compiling the game using the new Pypperoni Python Compiler.
  • Buffed the following skills:
    • Rapid Fire, Dagger Whirlwhind, Dagger Rain, Bayonet Bash, Maelstorm Charge, Point Blank, Cursed Thunder, Cursed Fire, Skewer, Shock Sweep, Coup, Inferno Sweep, Cursed Fire DoT, Backstab (The skill, not the general dagger bonus), Rapid Fire, Bayonet Rush, Blast, Soul Flay, Pestilence, Wither, Banish.
  • Nerfed grenade damage for Regular and Siege ammo types.
  • Changed Ripsaw Blade's required level from 26 to 23.
  • Tunnels to access seasonal areas like Hollowed Woods will now spit you back out the tunnel entrance, instead of having you freeze on the area’s loading screen.
  • Rudimentary pathing for NPCs has been implemented. You may notice Crazy Ned walking around Raven’s Cove.
  • Crew matching from the crew tab of your Friends window has been removed, as matchmaking has now been exclusively moved to Lobbies.
Bugfixes:
  • Mac players rejoice! The double backspace bug in chat has been fixed!
  • Bloodfire was not applying, and did not respect ranks.
    • Now adds upwards of 50% damage to a weapons base damage at max charge, and charges faster with higher ranks.
  • Bloodfire was not clearing when swapping to other swords, allowing players to apply its damage bonus to any sword type weapon.
    • Not like this mattered anyway, since it didn't actually boost damage until now.
  • Powerful was not applying the correct damage boost.
    • Now adds 10% damage per rank to a weapons base damage, applied before any other bonuses or modifiers.
  • Skills were not accounting for ranks 2+ when calculating damage.
    • They now deal 10% increased damage per rank.
  • Various skills were lowering their damage due to an incorrect calculation for abilities without a skill rank.
    • They now just gain 0 bonus, rather than a negative bonus.
  • Fixed the invisible water around Raven’s Cove and Padres del Fuego.
Known Issues:

General:

  • If you pan your camera down, the horizon line will turn black and lime green.
  • Ocean water may randomly turn black.
  • You may notice some weird texture glitches where pieces of the GUI or even clothing textures show up on the ground or in water reflections.
  • GUI like Friends Lists and the Quest Journal are really messed up. This is due to an issue with the newer version of Panda3D. We are coordinating with the Panda3D developers to get this issue fixed as soon as possible.
  • Bargain Billy has a very small walking path that causes him to spin around in circles. Dizzy. This is due to an error with Disney world data and will be resolved shortly.

Lobbies:
  • The team selection GUI is still clickable even in a game mode where teams are not used.
  • The scroll bar in the lobby player list does not function.
  • You cannot click on players’ names in the lobby list to bring up their pirate profiles.
  • The background on the “Select a Game Type” submenu within Lobbies is black, not red.
  • Clicking the dropdown bar to select your lobby location may suddenly become wonky, and not let you open the dropdown bar without clicking and holding your left mouse button.

Capture the Chest:
  • We have made every effort to ensure that Marauder’s Cove is as fair and balanced with location placement as possible.
  • It should not be possible to shoot through walls, and should be very difficult to glitch outside of the intended portions of the match, in order to ensure fairness between teams.
  • That being said, you still may encounter some issues with aiming or glitching out. Report them on the forums and these areas will be swiftly patched up.

TEST Update - 12/23/2019

Bugfixes:
  • Fixed a bug where lobby members couldn't teleport to the host of the Find-A-Crew lobby if that host player was on their own ship.
  • Potentially mitigated an issue which caused audio file loads to take an outrageous amount of time.
    • This issue in-game was a frame-rate drop when changing music, and was most noticeable when engaging/disengaging enemies.

TEST UPDATE - 12/24/2019

Bugfixes:

  • Fixed a bug causing NPC ships to attempt to attack fishing sloops.
  • Fixed a bug where pirates would be left in an "injured" state in Undead Poker.
  • Fixed a crash that happened at the end of Capture the Chest.
  • Fixed Nearby list not showing any player names.
  • Fixed Queen Anne's Revenge stack messages showing at the improper time.

TEST UPDATE - 12/27/2019

Bugfixes:

  • Cleaned up battle code removing duplicate methods.
  • Fixed a bug in flagships where multiple grappling hooks could hook a single grapple target.
  • Fixed the buttons not reenabling on the Avatar Chooser.
  • Potentially fixed that random nasty sailing crash which takes out entire groups of players.
    • We have applied two separate fixes here attempting to correct the issue, one on the server and one on the downloaded client.

TEST UPDATE - 12/28/2019

General:

  • Increased the visibility distance of distributed objects on both land and sea.
    • Land visibility should now be exactly as it was on POTCO.
    • Sea visibility has been increased to a much larger range. Please provide feedback on this.
Bugfixes:
  • Fixed a crash related to the distributed object generation of battle characters.
  • Fixed a bug causing deck enemies in Stage 1 of the Black Pearl Boss Battle to not attack.
    • Their movement is really messed up right now, we are working on a fix.
  • NPCs which behave different depending on the time of day now work properly.
    • Get back into your box, Crazy Ned.
    • Mr. Rage Ghost, you are not supposed to be here during the day time.

TEST UPDATE - 12/29/2019

General:

  • Decreased the visibility distance of distributed objects on sea.
    • We had to reduce it because of lag.
    • Please give feedback on how this new one looks.
    • We will continue tweaking this number until we find a good fit.
Known Issues:
  • We are aware of the crashes associated with loading NPCs, most notably right outside Fort Charles. We are working on a fix for this.

TEST UPDATE - 12/29/2019

Bugfixes:
  • Fixed a client crash caused by the servers not fully preparing the land enemy NPC AI prior to object generation.
  • Fixed a bug in NPC battle movement AI which caused NPCs to not attack back.

TEST UPDATE - 1/22/2020

Lobby Changes:

  • Added musicians to every Meetup & Parlor Game lobby location. Some also have bartenders or other NPCs.
  • Revamped the Parlor Games section of lobbies.
    • Now has "Poker & Blackjack," "Blackjack," and "Poker" categories. Poker & Blackjack has a mixture of tables, while the other two modes have tables of just their respective type.
    • Upped max players per Parlor Games lobby to 32.
    • By default, the betting multiplier for Poker and Blackjack in any lobby should now match Padres del Fuego at a minimum. Some special locations have even higher betting multipliers for high-stakes gambling.
    • Most of the pre-existing Meetup locations have been ported over to function as Parlor Game locations as well.
  • New Lobby Location: Undead Poker Jail
    • Exclusive to the "Poker" Parlor Game category.
    • 3 tables of Undead Poker.
  • New Lobby Location: The High Roller's Club
    • A fancy red parlor for only the fanciest of pirates.
    • Available in the Meetup, Blackjack, and Poker categories.
    • Note: This was the previously unfinished "Fancy Parlor."
  • New Lobby Location: Black Mack's Blackjack "Shack"
    • Not really a shack, but that rhymes! This three-story Blackjack palace was once a Navy tower. Card aficionado Black Mack has turned it into his personal casino.
    • Known issue with this location: Some of the walls may clip weirdly with the camera. We've tried to minimize this as much as possible, but it is a native issue with how the game behaves in relation to collisions (invisible walls).
    • Exclusive to the "Blackjack" Parlor Game category.
  • Howe's Harbor Hangout has been given dynamic lighting.
  • Bowman's Dinner Theater has had a few prop placement tweaks.
  • New Lobby Location: Avery Consignment & Catering
    • An imports & exports business that doubles as a party house.
    • Exclusive to the "Meetup" category.
    • Note: This was the previously unfinished "Spanish Office."
  • Shanty Shack and Casa Brawlvane have had minor prop tweaks. Shanty Shack now has a musician.
  • The "Meeting Hall" meetup location has been fully revamped, with new props, new atmospheric lighting, and a musician.
  • "Underground Parlor Games" is now the "Underground Warehouse."
    • The location has been given a makeover, with lots of new decorations and a musician.
  • All remaining meetup locations now have final preview images within the Lobby menu.
Weapon Balancing Changes:
  • All sabres now have an innate chance to critically strike based on rarity.
  • Buffed Moonstone Grenade
  • Increased damage dealt by Wound, Toxin, and Poison debuffs
  • Increased damage of Hurricane Slash
  • Increased range on Adder, Asp, Sidewinder, and Viper's Nest
  • Reduced damage of all broadswords by 10%
  • Reduced damage of Rapid Fire, Powerful, Stinkpot, Firebomb, Wither, and the Breath of Hollowed Woods ammo
  • Reduced duration of Adder's DoT
  • Reduced duration of Curse
Misc. Bugfixes:
  • Fixed a crash when a specific loading screen image would load.
  • Fixed a bug which wiped your skill stats when swapping districts.
  • Fixed an issue which caused the ship upgrade panel to scale poorly when the the game GUI scale was increased in the options settings.
    • It just doesn't scale at all anymore because it's already huge.
  • Potentially fixed an occasional assertion error when sailing.
    • Please test ships.
Maintenance & Other Changes:
  • A quest will no longer incorrectly tell you that Governor's Garden is BEHIND the Governor's Mansion.
  • Cuba, Devil's Anvil, and Rumrunner's Isle now have custom loading screens during the Winter Festival.
  • Localizer tweaks & grammar changes.
  • Modified 100+ models for internal ease and use within our level editor. You should not notice any differences in-game, but you might have a large resources download from this patch.
  • Modified a task in the Grand Pistol Upgrade quest. It will now properly direct you to Cutthroat Jungle specifically when tasked with defeating Spanish Undead Capitans.
  • Rebalanced the chance that a dealer will detect a cheat card in Blackjack and Poker.
  • The Raven's Cove mining elevator should no longer have a loading screen. It should briefly fade to black and then fade in on your pirate at the other side.
Known Issues:
  • Increased range on throwing knives and daggers is NOT intentional and will be fixed ASAP.
  • You may get trapped in the Undead Poker Jail behind the jail doors. Working on a fix right now.
Developer Notes:
  • Lighting in the Blackjack Shack is subject to change.
  • Balancing changes (including dagger range bug), Lobby changes, and RC mine shaft changes will notbe hitting the main game soon. Next update should include everything else.
    • Our reasoning for this is the following:
      • RC mine shaft changes don't function properly outside of Pyp.
      • Lobbies aren't ready yet.
      • Balance changes aren't ready yet.

TEST UPDATE - 1/23/2020

Features:

  • Lobbies now have functional scroll bars, both in the main lobby list and the player list within a specific lobby.
Bugfixes:
  • Fixed that awful random crash in caves and at sea, caused by fishing spots not cleaning up properly, has now been properly fixed.
    • Our previous fix was an emergency patch to stop the crashing, not a true solution to this issue.
    • The root of the problem should now be resolved.
    • As always, please let us know if this keeps happening.
  • Fixed a bug where the chairs at the poker table in the Faithful Bride were super fancy. This is Tortuga, not the Governor's Mansion!
  • Players are no longer able to join a Lobby until they've received a pistol from Barbossa. Previously, when players on a Welcome Ocean joined a lobby, it crashed everyone in the lobby except for the new player
Maintenance & Enhancements:
  • Reworked how location tags in the player card functions, so to achieve the following:
    • When on The Black Pearl, the island location is no longer blank, it now displays as "In a Treasure Map Lobby" with the sub-label of "The Black Pearl" (obviously).
  • The Royal Anchor (Port Royal), Skull's Thunder (Padres del Fuego), and Clubheart Tavern (Raven's Cove) have been given brand new interior models that do not include that useless 2nd door.
    • Note from Mr. Dev: This was a lot harder than I expected, but it's totally worth it because I'm a perfectionist.
  • Tons of localizer and quest typo fixes.
  • Renamed several internal files for clarity
Known Issues:
  • Scroll bars for Lobbies are super wonky. This is not by design, and is a symptom of the larger issue with scroll bars across the game, as you may have noticed.
    • In case you missed it elsewhere, this issue is caused by the updated version of Panda3D that the game is now running on. We are working with Panda3D developers to resolve this and several other core engine issues that you may see on the Test Server.
  • We're aware of the issue with buffs persisting from a previous session when you login.
    • This change was made in order to make specific reputation boosting potion effects persist after logout. Everything else is an unintended consequence.
    • We will be reverting this change overall shortly. This should happen before our next prod update.
    • We hope to have a proper fix for this out in the future. Thanks for your patience!
Response to Feedback:
  • Feedback on CTC gameplay has been noted! New spawn areas are being planned out, and should (hopefully) be ready once that pesky Pypperoni error that's causing the mode to crash is resolved.
  • Per your feedback, Black Mack's Blackjack Shack will soon be refactored into a location for both Blackjack AND Poker, to allow better variety for guild parlor game events.
    • Because it's no longer a Blackjack exclusive location, Black Mack and Yellow Dan will be removed, and the location will be given a name change. If you have any suggestions on what that name should be, let us know!
  • Don't worry, Black Mack and Yellow Dan are just moving to a new location, which should (hopefully) be the final Blackjack Shack.
    • Here's a sneak peek:

TEST UPDATE - 2/1/2020

Maintenance:

  • Updated Panda3D game engine to the latest development version. This update brings new engine optimizations and various miscellaneous under-the-hood improvements.
  • We have offloaded several additional graphical operations, such as the generation of sprites and hardware points, to the GPU. This will result in additional performance improvements and faster load times.
  • We have offloaded several graphics related operations to the GPU. Players may notice a small or large performance increase as a result of this change depending on your computer's hardware.
Bugfixes:
  • Fixed a game engine crash caused by how the engine handled Cg shader profiles.
  • Fixed all GUI issues associated with Direct Scrolled Frames.
    • The most notable occurrences of this issue were with the quest journal white bar, pirate friends list misalignments, and ship plunder panel.
  • Fixed a game engine crash caused by hardware animations interacting with shader objects.
  • Players are now no longer able to join a Lobby until they've received a pistol from Barbossa.
    • Previously, when players on a Welcome Ocean joined a lobby, it crashed everyone in the lobby except for the new player.
    • Note: This was listed as deployed in our last update. This evidently was a lie, we forgot to add this change to that release. It is properly included in this one.
Known Issues:
  • There is a crash on exiting Welcome Worlds. We are investigating this today and will hopefully have a fix out tonight

Maintenance:

  • Major cleanup of the code responsible for constructing character clothing and tattoos.
    • Most of our staff members are loading from the launcher to the Avatar Chooser in 10 seconds or less.

    • We are rewriting the name tag system in C++ and hope to have it out on TEST sometime this weekend.

  • We have changed this mechanic so it will instead deal reduced damage (45%) of what it would normally deal, and not apply self-damage effects if the player hits themselves to prevent the player from accidentally one-shotting themself.

TEST UPDATE - 4/17/2020

Features & Adjustments:

  • New custom loading screens for every lobby game mode, emulating the minigame loading screens for Fishing, Cannon Defense, etc.
  • New game mode icons for PvP modes, Meetups, and Treasure Maps.
  • Mayhew's Meeting Room now has several new props!
  • Made a new icon for the Adventures game mode category.
  • Added tons of error messages for various situations in Lobbies. These include but are not limited to:
    • Attempting to open the lobbies page before visiting Barbossa and getting your gun.
    • Attempting to join a lobby with an invalid or expired lobby ID.
    • Generic error messages in case a lobby's startup fails.
    • Opening the world map when in a Meetup or Parlor Game lobby.
    • Attempting to join a Lobby while in Cannon Defense.
  • Mayhem spawn points are now predictable.
    • Based on how POTCO did it, spawns are now determined by the sum of the current score.
    • Example: If the score was 2-1, that would be a total of 3; and that spawn would have a dedicated spot.
  • Tons of misc. tweaks to text and GUI in the lobby panel.
Bugfixes:
  • Davy Jones enemies will no longer display Jolly Roger's spirit when spawning or being defeated.
  • Fixed a bug where some tracks at musicians would be cut off too early.
  • Jumbees will now properly spawn and despawn with Jolly Roger's spirit effects.
  • Fixed a bug where Ghost Form's visual effects wouldn't display.
  • You can no longer open your world map when in a Meetup or Parlor Game lobby.
    • This is to hide some Disney infrastructure weirdness that made the world map display one singular empty island and nothing else.
    • Besides, you can't teleport out of a lobby anyway, so it makes no difference.
  • Fixed a bug that would cause ships to remain sunk in SvS.
  • Fixed a bug which caused the pirate shaders to not show properly. This made the first pirate on your character selection screen overly pale.
On the Horizon:
  • The level design team is finishing up tweaks with some new PvP maps for both Team Battle and Mayhem. No dates soon, but our QA testers have already gotten their hands on them, and we should have them out for you all soon.
