Request TLOPO Chat Filter

Cheysa Finn

Pirate Lord
Ahoy all!

Just a friendly reminder: If anyone sees behavior or chat that goes against our Terms of Service, you can report the offender by clicking on their player card.

One specific thing we are watching for is foul language communicated via creative phrases or spellings to avoid the BlackList filter.

For example, let's pretend the word "participate" is a bad word. Typing it in normally would get caught by the filter, and you would get a warning on your screen. But if you typed in "part ice pate", it would pass the filter, no problem.

If you see any occurrences of what is described above, please report it using the "Send Feedback" option on the Main Menu in game. Choose the "Social" dropdown option, and be sure to include what the specific words/phrase were so that we can add it to the BlackList.

Thank you!!!

I have a Question, One time I typed "Se*" by mistake when i wanted to type "Sec".
I got a warning of that, what does the warning do, like most of us want to type quickly and that sometimes makes you do mistakes.
Thanks :)

Ahoy Blade,

A warning just informs you that the word you typed is on the BlackList, and saying it in game chat can result in a temporary ban from the game.

If, as Blade pointed out, a blacklisted word is typed by mistake and you are temporarily banned from the game, will there be a way to dispute the ban? It seems unfair to have to wait out a ban for a simple slip of the fingers.

We'll look at those on a case by case basis. Feel free to email [email protected] with the situation if it pops up.

In the meantime, just be careful what you type :)

Guys, why does the chat need to have a whitelist in the first place?! Can't we just have a blacklist of inappropriate words(that doesn't include stuff like dang heck or crap)? This isn't Disney, and most of us are at least late teens and anyone who isn't probably cusses like a 12 year old on Call of Duty. Who cares about whitelisting 99% of the dictionary when all you need to do is blacklist inappropriate stuff? It's soooo annoying when you're trying to say something that's not on the whitelist and it gets blocked even if it's not inappropriate!

Your concerns are addressed pretty well in this thread: https://piratesforums.co/threads/wo...to-continue-having-blocked-words.13475/page-4.

FYI: If there are perfectly appropriate words that you cannot say on TLOPO, feel free to request that they be added to the WhiteList here: https://piratesforums.co/threads/the-official-whitelist-suggestion-thread.12084/. Then no more annoyance! :)

I vehemently disagree with what you said in that thread:

Some word sequences are blocked because they have been used to skirt around the BlackList. Innocent words are combined in a certain order to get away with saying a dirty word. This is the sole reason that you will have trouble sending messages with words that are on the WhiteList.

Innocent words were always combined to skirt around the blacklist, and always will be. Remember how everyone would say "won, too tree, for"?
Furthermore any deviation from the whitelist is blocked, making any typos completely unintelligible, let alone any words that aren't in it but should be. It's a lot of trouble to submit those words to the whitelist thread and not all of the players have a forum account. Also, censoring words that are on the whitelist on certain order is pointless because there are so many ways to do that. I can't say gay, even though most people in today's society would get all up in arms about that and how "gay" isn't a "bad word". So what do I say? "g a y". Oh wait, G and Y are censored. Now I can say Gee A Why. It takes so much work to cover every possible order of innocent words.

Remember, this is a game aimed at children. To protect them, we have purposefully not allowed names of other Social Media sites. We (obviously) cannot moderate those sites, so we will not condone the use of them. It is far too easy for children to fall prey to online predators (and I know they exist in this pirate community, because I've personally dealt with some before).

Though this game was aimed at children by Disney, it isn't anymore. And on the Disney subject itself, what about all the oversensitive moms who would say it promote violence, illegal activities, rebellion against authority, etc? You cannot try to be accountable for the exposure of children(what few may play this game) to social media, let alone inappropriate content on it, because players can resort to Discord, Steam chat, Teamspeak, Skype, etc to get the information across and thus you are still responsible for the poor child having freedom of speech indirectly through your game leading to content that he can get to ANY OTHER WAY if he chooses, and overwhelmingly likely does many times each day. Since it's inevitable that "these children" see that kind of content every day all the time, they will, statistically and according to your wording, have much more experience with "online predators" than they ever would within the game let alone outside of the game such as "social media" that they're led to from within the game. It happens everywhere.

For all of you adults that would like to speak outside of TLOPO, you can direct someone to go to this site in TLOPO chat (the web address is on the WhiteList). Once there, you can speak via PM and share what you wish.

Yes, for all of us adults and older teenagers. And so can the children, the poor, poor, children, making your efforts to shelter them from what they see every day meaningless.

I'm not even asking to remove the blacklist! That's where 90% of this would happen anyways. All I want is a removal of the whitelist system because it's so constraining, and inappropriate words can be added to the blacklist through the forum in the same way we do with the whitelist. This would normally lead one to believe that a lack of whitelist would make moderation on the chat required, when that's not true. Measures can be taken to encourage adults and mature teenagers to discourage and report sharing of personal information(which is already very easy to do), trolling, and otherwise inappropriate behavior. There are plenty of people mature enough to do that.

1) this isn't the right thread to have this discussion
2) this discussion has been had many times but the staff has kept their decision which pretty much means further discussion is rather pointless
3) there's nothing wrong with the current chat system and if you want to be able to say "gay" then suggest it to the whitelist, though I doubt it'll be added because it can be used in a derogatory and offensive manner

They want to keep this game E-10 to avoid any possible trouble with Disney. If you aren't happy with it then oh well. It's not going to change anytime soon. I would suggest you use Skype or IRC or something of that nature.

I understand what you're saying, and I have a few points to sum everything up.

1) It is impossible to add every possible typo to the WhiteList. People will just have to double check that everything is spelled correctly before they send it.

2) No matter how we choose to implement a chat system for TLOPO, someone out there will be unhappy with it. It is impossible to make it work for everyone.

3) No, we're not Disney, but we are using their ideas. It is in TLOPO's best interest to stay as close to Disney's standards as possible so that we don't attract unwanted attention from them.

4) No way of moderating chat is going to be all-together perfect. The more freedom we allow, the more moderation the game will require. TLOPO is not an online chat room.

Bottom line: Thank you for your input, but chat is going to stay the way it is now. We are doing our best to make TLOPO successful and this is the way we've decided to do it. Everyone loved POTCO despite it's restrictive chat, and the same will be for TLOPO (especially since you can request words to be added!).

It's not just typoes either, and remember I didn't ask for typoes to be added to the whitelist. Things like if I'm joking around and I wanna say "aaawwwww", I can't. It's that kinda stuff times a billion.

2) No matter how we choose to implement a chat system for TLOPO, someone out there will be unhappy with it. It is impossible to make it work for everyone.

Yes, someone will complain that there's still a blacklist, but you can still make most of the players happy with removing the whitelist.

3) No, we're not Disney, but we are using their ideas. It is in TLOPO's best interest to stay as close to Disney's standards as possible so that we don't attract unwanted attention from them.

My understanding was that you had to request permission from Disney to do this in the first place, that sounds like a lot more attention being attracted than removing the whitelist from chat, assuming that doing so would attract any attention at all.

4) No way of moderating chat is going to be all-together perfect. The more freedom we allow, the more moderation the game will require. TLOPO is not an online chat room.

I didn't say that chat should be moderated, I said that the next option readily in mind is for chat to be moderated, but that it's unnecessary because you guys can put effort into encouraging more mature players to, as I said before, discourage and report inappropriate behavior.

I don't expect you to change anything, though it would be nice if you guys would listen to us more on this. I appreciate you guys doing your best to increase TLOPO's longevity as much as possible, but I don't believe that this change to chat would be of any detriment to its longevity. But yes, I loved POTCO the way it was before - though somehow there were red words that I could type that would be shown in italics in chat but not censored - and I love TLOPO now, and I appreciate everything you guys do, I just wish chat could be better this time around.

Most people are happy with the filter. There is only a few who dislike the current system. It has worked pretty flawlessly so far.

If I may suggest this idea. "Not trying to start anything, I'm perfectly fine with chat as is, just wanted to make that clear." There is Pirate101 and Wizard101, some of you may or may not know what those are. Anyways, they have what they call Open chat which is only given to those that're 18+. It is still very restricted, such as words combined inappropriately wont work and appear red. BUT, it does allow numbers, and if you misspell something such as say, idk, watermelon, but you type warermelon "r being beside t so its a possible typo" it'd still work, and wouldn't be considered a word that isn't allowed. But, if you pay close attention this game, it does pretty much so have that. To those who are 18+ numbers are allowed, and words that aren't used in a bad phrase or way worked fine for the most part. And just appear as ittalics "I hope I spelled that right if not, my apologies." And I get what you're saying SlabGizor117, but please also look at it from the staff's position. Yes, most people aren't going to misuse words, but still safety precautions do need to be in place for those who do, and those who most definitely will. The best, and SAFEST, thing to do would be request words to be added to the whitelist. Such as sometimes you may put 2 words beside each other and they aren't going to work. REQUEST, those words be allowed to be used in that way. If its not inappropriate then it should be fine. If not, then it should remain blacklisted. Again, not trying to start anything, I was just trying to help.

POTCO had Open Chat as well, and it was pretty...unrestricted, I guess I could say? I mean, we could say basically anything that wasn't profanity or ***ual, and numbers were allowed.

Exactly my point, for the most part you could say things you needed to. And It works exactly the same as potco's chat did, so that's why I'm fine with it as it is.
