Discussion Uses for Sloop?

Besides it being the fastest ship, Sloops feel useless to me besides transportation. The cannons, health, and cargo are lacking in comparison to the other 3 ship types, especially in combat.

What would be a good use for a sloop besides sailing across the sea in a few minutes?

If you feel the need to solo a treasure fleet, their small size and maneuverability makes them good choices.
However, their true uses lie in SvS. The same reasons listed above allow sloops to function as highly maneuverable gun decks. You frequently see war sloops dominating the battlefield, with barrages of fury flying from the deck guns.
Furthermore, teams of two nefarious SvS'ers typically will take out a light sloop and run around racking up a massive bounty, getting behind ships and harassing them with fury safely out of the enemy's firing angle.
Yes, there is truely an effective use for sloops, which is why I have a War Frigate, War sloop, and light sloop.

Since my SvS ship of choice was the War Frigate, I won't be saying anything about the SvS aspects of the ship.
However, I do know about it for SvE and just sailing.
First of all, sloops aren't actually the fastest ship. They are tied for the fastest with brigs. Unlike the brigs though, they are much smaller and harder to hit than the massive floating fortresses. Also, if you're just looking for a transport ship, they are much cheaper than buying a brig, which is the most expensive ship.

They are pretty much only useful in svs due to their small size

I'll probably always have a light sloop laying around, because aside from the broadsides being next to nothing, they're incredible in PvE. You'll almost never get hit (unless you're doing it wrong) and you can transition seamlessly from sailing to cannoneering. And while they are severely lacking in many aspects as a class overall, bear in mind that they're by far the cheapest option. A war sloop isn't meant to be on par with a war brig because it costs 60,000 less gold. That being said, they do of course have their own set of pros that the other ship types don't offer.

I'd say it's best use be kept for SvS, and only the War and light sloop versions... The normal sloops use is best as a hoping ground to get onto more advance ships, and for fishing!

As for SvS, it is light. Easier to maneuver then the brig, which allows for mobility, and has the easiest range out of any type range of dodging incoming enemy attacks!

It is best for fast gold runs, transportation and SvS (Ship vs Ship). In SvS, the Sloop -typically the War Sloop- is used as an Interceptor. The captain attacks a ship, has his gunners fire at the enemy and then rapidly sail away to avoid the "counter punch". If you use it's speed to your advantage it can be an outstanding strategy. The other uses (transportation and quick gold runs) are pretty self-explanatory.

The sloop mainly has a place in SvS due to its small size. This small size makes them popular for harassing larger ships with powerful ammunition while being somewhat hard to return fire to. As far as general purpose sailing, the Brig has the exact same speed while being superior in most other ways except being a larger target. If you need a cheap, fast Transport ship, Sloop > Brig, but as far as combat against the AI, Brig > Sloop,

I still think the Sloop's speed should be buffed up about a knot so it is actually faster than the Brig and has a true purpose outside of SvS.
