Utilize the TLOPO Login API for Pirates Functionality

Hey everyone,

I noticed that the forums has a Pirates functionality, which allows users to add their pirates. I think it would be neat if we could "verify" these pirates by using the login API provided by TLOPO. This could extend from simply acknowledging the name of the pirates, up to the ability to automatically populate skill fields and other datum.

I've given this concept some thought before. Right now, the Pirates functionality here is running some fairly legacy code. I'd like to rewrite it from scratch some day, and I think that would be a good time to bake this functionality in. Ideally, I'd like some way to associate TLOPO and forum accounts together too (maybe even something with OAuth, so that people don't have to create two accounts to begin with). From there we could setup automatic syncing of Pirates.

Something to consider for the future, definitely.
 
I agree, @Davy Darkrage , OAuth would be a good first step. Perhaps that can be arranged in the near future, as I don't see it being awfully difficult to set up? I know when TLOPO first started up, people were hoping to sign up to the TLOPO site with their already existing accounts, and especially when the forums and game affiliated there were a lot of inquiries about it. :)

Would another benefit of this be eventually having leader boards like POTCO had? That would be kinda neat too. Don't know if there's something you could do where the number of ships sunk or enemies defeated could be processed in the game and then ordered automatically in a leader board.

Yeah, it shouldn't be too bad. I have a few things in the pipeline for September/October, so I should be able to take a closer look after that. At this point it probably makes more sense to add OAuth to the TLOPO site and add a "Login with TLOPO Account" button to the forums. From there we can look at exposing Pirate information via the TLOPO API and I can build support into the Pirates feature.

As far as I know, leader boards are planned for the future. They'll probably be built into the main TLOPO website though.
