Question Weapon Categories

So this may sound very stupid but I have been wondering why this is for awhile now.
Why are Throwing Knives and Dagger mixed in the same category (meaning level on player card)?
Dagger - Bigger blade, Stays in your hand, has different attacks than Throwing Knives.
Throwing Knives - Smaller blade, throwable, different attacks than dagger.
Seems like 2 different weapons from my point of view.

They differ from Daggers in that instead of a melee combo chain, they have a ranged knife-throwing combo. Due to this throwing knives are more long-range oriented than daggers. Other than that, knives use the same skill set as daggers, and a pirate's skill with them is defined by the same level.

I guess that POTCO intended it to be like this and there isn't much wrong with that anyways.

Throwing Knives were introduced as a sub-set of Dagger. Kind of like how Sabres and Broadswords are sub-sets of Swords (Cutlasses, since you start out with a Cutlass).

There are many subsets of many of the weapon categories. It makes the game interesting and fresh. I bet even some hardcore players don't recognize the voodoo subcategories. The weapon system is fairly complex and was planned to be even more complex than this from what we could tell from unreleased items and planning. I've probably missed something but this is a brief overview.
  • Swords: cursed and noncursed
    • cutlasses, sabres, and broadsword
  • Dagger: throwing knifes, and dagger
  • Guns: muskets, bayonets, repeaters, pistols, and blunderbuss
    • Repeaters have different number of barrels as well from 2-3 but the game has unreleased items for up to 5+
  • Dolls: mojo, bane, spirit, and normal
  • Staves: dark, warding, nature, and elemental (introduced with TLOPO's hallowed woods update)
