Honorable Pirate
Currently spending skill points actually decreases the reputation earned, due to attacks dealing more damage, and thus, taking less time to kill an enemy. It occurred to me that making a skill point contribute an extra 2% (or more?) experience for each one spent would be nice.

Reputation is explained on the wiki page as:
"Once a skill point is spend, the pirate will receive LESS reputation points for using that skill! Some pirates choose to save or bank up their skill points to either buy a better ability or to retain the higher earned XP."

Why should spending skill points upgrade only the damage and not reputation gain too?

This suggestion would apply across the board, but particularly I was thinking with sailing as well as grenades. This way, if you upgrade a broadside, you're not getting the short end of the stick for dealing more damage. Fully upgraded broadsides would receive an extra +10% experience once the enemy ship is sunk (or per hit, hadn't fully decided which would be more beneficial), so 40 rep becomes 44 rep and so on. Same goes for grenades. As it stands now, upgrading grenade damage (like all other weapon skills) impedes experience gain with the weapon because you deal more, and don't throw as many at them. Seems counter-intuitive, no?

Note that the +10% I think would apply to just that particular skill used. So if you had a maxed left broadside but only +3 on right broadside, you'd find yourself rotating to use left more often. I don't think it would dramatically increase experience gain, but would provide something of a boost for the skills that take more effort to gain any reasonable rep.

Thoughts? Would this be feasible?

Cheers!

I would prefer it to stay the same personally. POTCO/TLOPO is a grinding game, which is why the skill gives less reputation most likely. When you upgrade Siege Charge to five and you can kill an enemy in one shot, well, that's not doing a lot of work so I don't see why you deserve extra rep if you just one shotted an enemy. To counter the less reputation, I usually use multiple skills on weapons like staff and doll (such as Curse-- rank 1 and Scorch-- rank one). Basically, in my opinion, I'd like it to remain the same.

Fair point. Granted, my pirate is only at level 23 atm, so I have yet to experience siege charge's awesomeness. She has almost level 19 sword, but only level 8 sailing, and this is with having sunk several high level ships on multiple occasions. Initially I thought something like +5% experience for each skill point, but then decided on 2%. However, just to point this out, by the time you get siege charge to rank 5, you've already gotten a level 20+ grenade, and by that time you're just leveling it for the sake of maxing. I was coming from a still-in-the-process-of-leveling standpoint. I don't think +10% would be too much to add, do you? It would maybe negate some of the experience you'd lose from spending skill points, but probably not enough to offset one-shotting enemies.

Just my two cents - thanks for the feedback! :)
