Hi! We get this question a lot. Unfortunately, we won't ever be adding it as a feature in the game.
TLOPO staff goes through upwards of 200+ player names every single day. We manually review each and every one of them.
Think about the numbers:
If we get 200 player names a day, and each character has 4 ship slots, that's 800 more names we have to review, for a total of 1000 names reviewed manually every single day.
That workload is unfortunately too much for our small volunteer staff team to handle, so we've elected to just stick with the name wheel. We're always up to adding more names to the list. And you can always rename your ships to update to a new name you may like.

What about just allowing you to rename your ship but constraining it to the pre-approved options?
