Often, I see ships under the cloak of invulnerability after respawning man the cannons and fire on ships that are careless enough to approach. Currently, the invincibility expires prematurely only if the ship moves. Maybe the invincibility should terminate if any shots are fired, or skills triggered while at the helm.
