Can we have a new level cap or no cap at all? Just wishing that I could continue leveling as I enjoyed that part of playing.

That's why you have the option to create new pirates and level them up.
I think the level cap of 50 fits the game well, as the cap being at 60-70-80 or higher would just seem to new people, possibly, unreachable?
I get where you are coming from, you would like for your main pirate with all your goodies to be able to get even stronger and better, and I agree that would be cool too, but when dev's tinker with the level cap I think that there are more aspects to take account for than just people wanting their main pirate to be better and stronger.

The game is easy enough as it is, what I think you really want is the leaderboards back so you can track your progress.
Am I correct?
