Personally I think the best way to get started is just to follow the main quest line. It will help you find your way around a bit and get a grasp on the basic mechanics of game play while you settle in.
As Luna said, there are lots of guides and some very friendly, helpful people here on the forums if you need help with more specific things

The wiki http://piratesonline.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Quests is well worth bookmarking too. It's always my go to place when I get stuck
