This past September - the 23rd to be exact, I ran across a brand new pirate - level 1. This was his first pirate. I spoke to him and answered his questions, gave him some hints. He agreed to join the Dark Archive. A little over 2 months later, he masters his pirate! What an accomplishment!

Yes, it's very possible, if that person is very focused and determined. I've seen it happened in many of my friends: Tommy (Notorious), Camber, Tom Yellowfish (Crew Quarters). My friend Tommy has mastered 8 pirates on Live and 2 pirates on Test, in about 15 months I've known him.
(I have only mastered one pirate in all that time. )
