I don't want to sound ungrateful cause I'm blessed to have the opportunity to play this game once again. However, what's taking so long?
Probably because there is so much needed to develop and fix. As cheysa said, "The game is kind of like an iceberg, you only see 25% of it the rest is behind the scenes", but that behind the scenes part is really important and can take a while.
 
The team is still busily working on additions/fixes in preparation for Beta, here's a summary of recent updates:

- Added barbershops
- Added selling
- Added level checks, before allowing weapons to be used
- Updated enemy respawn after loot dropped
- Several Cannon Defense improvements
- Cave tunnel fixes
- Quest priority fixes
- Enemy targeting/displayed damage fixes

Could you give us a hint on what the server version changes on the launcher are all about? ;)

- Teleport: Enable SVS island TP, fix port-of-call tracking.
- Sailing: Improvements to enemy ship movement/weapons, fix own ship stalling
- Quests: Fix rewards when completing quest task(s)
- Selling: Fix gold amount received for item quantities being sold
- Tutorial: Fix camera angles and cutscenes
- Weapons: Fix level check for sailing charms
