Alpha keys definitely aren't a new concept. Any established MMO that is going through testing phases is going to have closed access to the game with the usage of keys.
I just think this is an entitlement issue with the new generation. Nobody is entitled to play TLOPO.

Well, to my knowledge, Alpha isn't primarily for playing. It is mostly for testing. You don't need thousands of people to test a game. And there isn't even an exceeding amount of stuff for the public to play right now.

Would you rather they speed through it and have the game riddled with bugs and instability, or would you rather have a game that had CARE and TIME invested into it to make sure it is worth playing?
It's not always "gimme gimme gimme." You need to be patient. Take Blizzard's World of Warcraft, for example. That game underwent about 4-5 years of development. While this is no huge MMO like WoW, development is an inherently time-consuming process.
