There is a place only mentioned in whispers by only the bravest pirates..
Fasch's End, a small island near the ends of the northern seas filled with trickery and hallucinations, if one is unlucky enough to ever stumble upon the mythical island. It took it's name from unfortunate Jessica 'Ferret' Fasch, a new pirate who had been scourging the seas, who had lost her way amongst the storms, originally intending to set sails for Tortuga. Weeks had passed, and Fasch was starving, having resorted to drinking seawater and was almost prepared to start drinking ink as well, but the sight of land stopped her, filling her with the hope she hadn't seen in days. From afar, the island was misty, foggy, but as she got closer it appeared more welcoming. She docked her ship as quick as she could and as soon as she got on land, the island changed around her. It turned warm, the trees were all of a sudden more abundant and the air was filled with the smell of spices. Hungry and desperate, with seawater addling her mind, Fasch stumbled to the other side of the island. There was a feast, and golden treasure chests as far as the eye could see, with many quills about. Yes, quills. It is said that the island will do anything to entice you, and Fasch was nothing if not a quill collector. After stuffing herself with the vast varieties of foods before her, Fasch ran and took as much of the treasure as she could, or tried to. As soon as she opened the chest, it sucked her in almost instantly, many say straight to the bottom of the world, and Fasch had no time to even scream. One can only shudder at what would happen if all four chests were opened... It is said that the sea would most likely drain itself. The island is dangerous, but it must be guarding some sort of treasure. You just have to open your eyes past the mist.
As a questline, it would be a little more based on logic. People have been whispering about the whereabouts of Fasch's End, and the pirate's goal is to outsmart the island and take the true treasure, probably found through the island's controversial guidance (i.e. the island is indicating for you to go one way, you actually have to go the other way. The island gives you a sword and monsters, but you actually have to outrun them.) The treasure would be a legendary sword named Free Raider.
The island changes often to cater to it's victim's tastes, but from a ship it looks like this:

"Amistad Isle"

(image from history.com - http://cdn.history.com/sites/2/2015/09/Vue_du_Fort_Royal_de_la_Martinique.jpeg)

The cruelest island of the Caribbean, forged on misery and blood of the unfortunate souls treated as commodities, beaten, starved. The town strife with disease as African men, women, and children pour in by the thousands, on their way to the Americas. A lucky few may stay, those lucky few subjected to grueling work in sugarcane, all the fruits of their labor swept away by the Crown, or the EITC. Death is common, the Crown keeping an iron fist on her holdings, the benefits of free labor at the gruesome expense of millions too shiny of a target to not be kept in her hand. However, these lucky few are also in perfect conditions for liberation...

Aye, this is terrible. As Pirates, all we dream of is freedom to live the best life, plundering the redcoats, taking their treasures for our own, seeing them eye to eye on their atrocities.

Now is the time. We cannot allow the Crown to bring these horrors down on humanity. Even for all of the evil that we make, all of the life that we take, all of the treasure that we plunder, we do not stand by while these innocent people are brutalized by the tyrannical heathens. Come forth, my brothers and sisters. Come together. Come together and liberate these souls.

It is time.

We've garnered support from Spanish privateers, in that our one common enemy stands before us, preparing to fall. It is time to strike, it is time to secure freedom for these people, we shall bring them into our cause and relief them of the wretched shackles of servitude.

Colonial_FortAmsterdam01_full.jpg

(historyfiles.co.uk)
We must seize the island by force, crippling the Crown's navy. They hold an iron grip on the island, the ships are equally strong as the forts they protect. We will forge a path through their waters, fire and blood will rain as we cast their ships into the abyss. The Spanish will send a fleet of their own, and they are paying us a handsome keep for our assistance. We will cut through their men of war, and ram a Frigate straight through their walls.

(exploringoffthebeatenpath.com)

Storm the fort. We will burn it all, and take the treasure to boot! Slay all of the Crown's men, the EITC's mercenaries. Bring the fort to it's knees, and then drive a stake through it's heart. Colonel Wickham will be the ticket to liberation of the many slaves on the island. We must storm his quarters, he will be ours then.

(Berkeley.edu)

These poor souls will be freed from their bonds, the whip cast onto the ruthless holders of such intolerable acts. We will plunder the plantations, and bring these free men to the shore. We will cast them out to sea, toward Tortuga. They will be free at last.

This is more of a "dungeon" island, so here's the invasion.
- Plunder the British Navy
- Weaken the Port Wall
- Ram the Port
- Storm the fort and eliminate the garrison
- Capture Colonel Wickham
- Find the Slaves (There will be multiple plantations on the island, each one must be stormed, where mercenaries are guarding)
- Liberate the Slaves (Slaves will be untied and sprint for the shoreline)
- Escape (Pirates flee to the port and board a ship, where they all sail toward Tortuga, fighting off several British boarding parties and pursuing ships)

Here is my submission. The drawing at the bottom of the description is the island.
Isla de los Craneos

Background story:

‘Isla de los Craneos’ is ’Island of the Skulls’. The name originated from Spanish Sailors who found themselves stranded on this perilous piece of earth and rock surrounded by deadly coral reef and sea creatures that seemingly lust for human flesh and blood. The shape of the island resembles a skull but the name has a more sinister origin.

Baren with high rocky hills, caverns & caves those unfortunate souls stranded here will learn why this is the Island of the Skulls.

Spirits of the ancestors of local tribes protect the secrets of this island using strong voodoo.

Coral reef surround the island making it difficult for western ships to navigate safely to the shore. This is why the island has never been settled by civilized man.

Natives from nearby islands use crude canoes to navigate through the coral reef. They come to this forsaken place to engage in pagan rituals consisting of the unthinkable; these are cannibal head hunters deeply rooted in spiritual voodoo worship. When sailors are unfortunate enough to be stranded here many are captured by the natives and held prisoner in caves located throughout the hills for later use in their rituals, or taken to their home island as a feast for their tribe members.

If a prisoner proves to be resistant the tribe digs a pit deep enough for a human, place him inside bound hands and feet, and bury him up to the neck leaving the head exposed. Children gather and play with the exposed head, sometimes urinating and defecating on it. This is a slow, painful humiliating death. The heads are left in place until the flesh rots away, eaten by insects and small animals. The skulls are then harvested and used as decorations, awards, rewards and even toys. Possession of human skulls are a sign of status among the tribes.Sailors who manage to escape the island carry these tales back to the mainland. These tales resulted in the name ‘Isla de los Craneos’.

I tried to add this picture I photo shopped for my entry. I hope it's not too late. It's from Biblical Archaeology: Golgotha (Skull Hill)http://satellitearchaeology.us/?p=148
I used the original image to make it into an island...

My island is called Gregor's Port

Storyline:
A crew of pirates where exploring uncharted seas. The crews captain, Captain Charles Gregor, was on the look out for any place to dock and repair their ship, The Red Eagle. The whole crew had hit a storm sailing, and the decision was made by Captain Gregor to search for a place to dock in order to repair the Red Eagle. The ship was barely floating when they spotted a silhouette of an island, this was not any island known by them so they charted it on their maps, They set for the island. when they arrived, they discovered it was a highly suitable place to start a town, half of the crew got to work on the town, the other started to repair the Red Eagle, the town was later given the name Gregor's Port after their great captain Charles Gregor.

Quest breakdown:
The island is home to many undead pirates who once inhabited the island, when the town was completed, it was invaded by these undead fiends. Pirates must collect the crystals from the caves and essence from these undead and bring it all back to Charles Gregors great grandson, Harly Gregor to create a warding stone so the undead will no longer terrorize the town.

Island name: Isla éter
Lingual roots: Spanish
Meaning: Aether Island
backstory word count: 394

Isla éter is an ancient island of myth that was thought to only have existed in legends and bedtime stories. Also known as Atlantis, Isla éter was discovered by and secret expedition launched by the Spanish empire in search for the Holy Grail. The island showcases an extravagant city that once had a blossoming culture and advanced society. The island gets its name: Isla éter, which means Aether Island because of the menacing events that took place in its boundaries, for on this very island it was discovered that the Holy grail was forged at the heart of the island. In order to create such an unearthly artifact, the darkest form of voodoo had to be combined with holy incantations. The result of such a mixture of opposites caused for gateways into heaven and hell to open which caused for total chaos to be unleashed on the island. The detrimental event annihilated all living forms on the island leaving behind the skeleton of the once thriving society that occupied the island. Legend has it that buried in a deep cavern at the center of the island the very forge that the holy grail was created still exists and that if one were to use it to forge a cutlass, that cutlass would be so powerful it would cut through not only flesh and bone, but the very fabric of its victims soul. The clash of good and evil on the island raged on for many years and after what seemed like a never ending war, the tormented souls that emerged from the underworld prevailed and drove out many of the kindred spirits that came from the aether. Most of the good spirits were destroyed, but the ones that remain are in hiding and will leap at any chance to restore good to the island and shut the gate to hell that was previously opened. On this island, adventurers set out to find these hidden should who will help them uncover the forgotten forge to destroy the tormented souls that currently host the island. However, it is entirely up to the adventurer once they find the forge, whether they help restore peace to the island and rid the evil spirits, or if they fall victim to the corruption of the twisted will of the underworld and send the fate of the island into complete darkness.

Quest: Pirates must find all the kindred spirits who will give them hints on the location of the forgotten forge while fighting through tormented souls. Pirates cannot kill anything on the island without a weapon created at the forgotten forge, they can only cripple them. At the end, they can choose the path of good and rid the island of the tormented souls and trade their created weapon for a buff called the blessing of the aether and restore the city of Atlantis, or they can choose the path of evil and keep their forged weapon and annihilate all the kindred spirits making highway for tormented souls into this world.

Island Name: The Island Of Hope:
Background: Legends have been told that during ancient times a lone pirate who mocked the gods sailed the 7 seas, the only places the gods could not touch him, for that was his own domain. This pirate, whose name has long been forgotten throughout history, plundered the seas without ever stepping foot on land, for if he did a fate worse than death would get a befall him; for all the gods felt nothing but anger and hatred for him, all but one, Poseidon, god of the seas. Poseidon granted this pirate his greatest wish, to be able to sail the seas forever with immortality, given that he most do it alone. However, one day, while sailing through a pile of ship wreck, the pirate discovered a girl floating on a single barrel of rum within the ship wreck. Having lived 200 years alone on his ship, he dared let her on, for his loneliness couldn't be bared any longer. He quickly hid the 7 year old girl in the storing room so that Poseidon doesn't notice her presence. Years have passed, and he's been raising "Hope" in secret. As each year gone by, hope noticed the pirates appearance not changing, which raised questions, but atlas she started to grow feelings towards her savior and decided to trust him and not ask him why she may never leave the room, or why he may not leave the sea. One faithful day, when hope turned 21, she decided to get surprise the pirate, whose always stirring the ship, and ask him to marry her (For she knew the pirate also had feeling for her). But the moment she stepped out of the room, the waters shook and the skies darken. Poseidon grew furious at the betrayal bestowed to him by the pirate. So he turned hope into an Island and forced the pirate to stay there for all eternity, for if he tried to leave, the other gods will find him. Unable to reach each other, the pirate and hope prayed to the goddess of hope and dreams, Elpis, to allow them to reach each other for even a moment. As an offering, the pirate gave her all his treasure (which he collected in the course of 213 years). She granted his request and allowed 1 day every 10 years in which they can be happy together. So they waited every 10 years for the next time they may see each other, in that small island known to the world as Hope's Island, but known to the pirate as "The Island Of Hope", for all his hopes and dreams dwell within her.

Quest Line: Every 10 years, the island of hope becomes visible, so you and your crew head out to find the treasure offered to the goddess. There you encounter Hope and the pirate and learn their story. You also learned that if you take the treasure the goddess will revoke her deal with the pirate and will not allow them to see each other again. There's three choices you see, 1. Take the treasure anyways (having to fight hope, the pirate and the goddess; 2. Defeat Poseidon to transform Hope back into human (forever, not just for a day); or 3. Walk away because you don't care, and already have all the treasure you need. Will you help the tragic pirate win true love, and inherit the legend, Or will you be what destroys them forever. You decide ;)
(Plot twist, the pirate is actually you long lost great X10 uncle)

Are you disqualified if your story is longer than 400 words? And does that include quest line?
I do believe 400 words is just a guideline, and I think the 400 words was the total word count.
After reading the staff posts in the first 2 pages of the contest, it sounds like they're trying to keep it restricted to 400. Someone asked about going over 400 for the purpose of developing creatures for the island, and the response was
You can go slightly over, just try to be concise if possible.

Also the contest rules in the first post specify this:
In order to let the judges review all posts, there is a 400 word limit on stories.
And yes I'm pretty sure it includes the story line.

@Captain Redhorn could you please clarify in case I got anything incorrect here? :)

The 400 limit is kind of a relaxed limit. It's mainly a general guideline of how many words (total) to use. Any posts that exceed the limit greatly may not be considered to win (because the judges will have to review a lot of entries).

Kingeater Castle/Sailors Rest

Story:
Without any real warning, a old castle floating on the ocean has appeared nearby a merchants trade route some time ago. Few pirates have dared to enter, but the few that have went ahead to claim beforehand that "they will be king of the castle." and haven't come back out. Because of this, the castle has been named "Kingeater Castle". Anyone is free to enter but so far no one has returned.

Quest:
You pick up the quest in town and the castle would spawn in a specific area a ways away. When you enter you would fight fully armored knight that would die relatively easy. When you get to the end of the dungeon and to the throne room. You would have the option to either sit on the throne or to destoy it. Sitting on the throne would start a boss fight with a giant Venus Flytrap that was actually hidden as the throne via a illusion. If you destroy the throne the fight would start again, but the Venus Flytrap would lose 1/8th of its health. After you win the fight, the castle would disappear and be replaced with a small jungle island with nothing on it, dubbed Sailors Rest.

(Side notes) the castles entire purpose is to make it feel like you traveled back to the medieval era, so you would immediately feel like something's wrong and know that the entire thing is a trap.
The knights, despite how armored they are, are also meant to be easy since they are illusions as well.
The name Kingeater Castle is a literal meaning in that the previous pirates have gotten eaten by the Venus Flytrap.

Name: The Whale Island

Backstory: The Whale Island is an island one the back of an abnormally large but magical whale. It is said that this whale has lived over 5,000 years, but has only been visited by a few men and women. This magical whale only appears to those that can befriend the whale. But how can one befriend this whale? No one knows the answer yet... Some ancient recently recovered scrolls speak of a magical herb on this island that has amazing healing powers and represents life itself. The scrolls suggest that this magical herb, named "The Life Giver", can heal the most brutal wounds, and can weaken a reincarnated spirit of death with the flesh of a skeleton. People have speculated that the incarnated spirit of death is the notorious Jolly Roger, but if the herb can really weaken him has yet to be discovered. No one has been able to test this theory since the whale has not resurfaced in over 200 years... until now.

Quest: Jolly Roger is trying to make the whale surface using his evil powers and he may yet succeed. Gather a crew and save the whale before Jolly Roger can kill the magical creature to gain its trust and befriend it. You may yet be able to locate the Life Giver and end the tyranny of Jolly Roger.

Isle of the darned

Backstory/Questline: Little is known about this island except at first, this island was a resort to most, peaceful and serene, being a perfect getaway for the hard working pirates of the Caribbean. However, after the crew of the infamous pirate Nefarious committed mutiny, the island grew dark and corrupt. The darkness lay waste to everything in it's path, living or not. All that is known now is anyone who thirsts for a second chance at life to seek vengeance towards the people that betrayed them travels to the island. There is where the cursed spirit of Nefarious grants them a second chance to right their wrongs, or what most people do, hunt down the double-crosser. The quest line would consist of talking to a mysterious man at the port of Cuba. He would ask you to help him fish in return for some gold. When you accept, the man stabs you in the back and runs off. Prior to accepting a note would pop up pledging your loyalty to darned instead of Spanish or French. You wake up in complete darkness, not knowing if you're alive or not. You feel a presence around you but nothing appears to be moving. Suddenly, you see the spirit of Nefarious appear, as if something from a fantasy book. He asks if you would like a second chance at life, serving under his command, or to rest in peace. You choose to live under his command and begin the quests he asks of you, whether it be sinking Spanish and French ships or collecting sacred artifacts from the British.
